ALBUMS that play like GREATEST HITS (That aren't greatest hits)
Posted by: treaclefingers ()

Have you ever listened to an album that utterly gobsmacks you and you think you must be listening to a greatest hits? And then find out you aren't?

A few examples I can think of...

Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers
Abbey Road
Who's Next
T Rex - Electric Warrior
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours

Very rarely an act cuts a record where every song could be a hit.

Any others out there?

Michael Jackson - "Thriller" - (best-selling album of all time) - Wikipedia:

"He wanted to create an album where 'every song was a killer' ... why can't every one be like a hit song? ... why can't every song be so great that people would want to buy it if you could release it as a single?"

-Oooooh, often thought about it. It would have to be "Rumours" by Fleetwood Mac. "Thriller" by Michael Jackson too is a good contender. I have often thought all albums should be like that. At the other end of that scale there are some of Madonna`s albums, like "True Blue" and "Like A Prayer". -Just a couple of hits and the rest fillers.

-Now, back to our issue, of course there are most of the Beatles`s albums. -Led Zep`s first four, ah well; David Bowie`s "Ziggy Stardust" and "Alladin Sane" too, although "Cracked Actor" had a bit too daring lyrics, hadn`t it? -Plus "Scary Monsters" too. Then there is "Country Life" by Roxy Music, packed with only good songs. There are a whole lot more to mention, which only means that they do exist. However, there is just too much of the other stuff. (You got that, didn`t you? I know you have to be explicit on the net to be understood, but then there is the matter of using everyday language...)

Thinking of an AC/DC album, probably Highway to Hell and Back and Black.

I guess Tattoo You and Some Girls are like that as well, so I'd rank them with Sticky & LIB.

If I'm thinking of another Beatles album maybe Sgt. Pepper. While Revolver & Rubber Soul are great, they aren't 'greatest hits' sounding.

I could be wrong, but the last time I did informal research on this topic, I think "Rumors" had the greatest number of songs that went on to become concert staples.

the only albums I've kept over the years are ones where I don't skip any songs cuz I like all the songs, so I guess, all my albums are greatest hits

I'm surprised no one mentioned the first Cars album. It very nearly is their greatest hits. I also remember playing Neil Young's Harvest for a friend of mine who asked me if it was, in fact, a greatest hits album.

I think the ultimate example of this, and again, I'm surprised no one's mentioned it, is Dave Mason's Alone Together. Several years after its release, his record label actually put out a Very Best of Dave Mason album with a track listing that was almost identical to Alone Together. It included nearly every track that from that album, and not a whole helluva lot else; One track from Headkeeper, and live recordings of two Traffic songs.

Springsteen’s Born in the USA was a greatest hits album! 8 of the tracks were top 10 hits I think.
