J. Geils Band - America's Rolling Stones?

Exciting lead singer, funky ass rhythm section, great records, and awesome live act.

They deserve the title moreso than fellow Bostonians Aerosmith (trying too hard to be the Glimmers). Any other candidates? New York Dolls? Wet Willie? Skynyrd?

I love J. Geils. Your thought?

I do love them too. My uncle played me "Showtime!" when I was a kid and it made a huge impression on me.

"If that's love, then... Looooooovvvvvveeeeee..."

*take needle off, put arm to the side, lift the record off the still spinning turntable, flip it over, put it back on the spindle, pick up the arm, put the needle back on*

"...STIIIIINNNNNKKKKKKKKKSSSSSSS!"

What a great feeling!

And, of course, "Centerfold" was the dirtiest song ever when you're fourteen. "Freeze Frame" always rocked my face. And Peter Wolf's solo album "Lights Out" was a personal favorite of mine back in the day. I should dig it out and give it another spin.

They opened for Bob Seger here in Atlanta a few years back. I didn't know until literally the night of the concert. I would have loved going to see the J. Geils Band live. That would have been a lot of fun.

Live Fullhouse is imho one of the best live albums ever imho. 'Blow your face out' is fantastic as well. They opened for the Stones in Rotterdam ofcourse, they really got the crowd going. What a great band! Love them, Woofer Goofer!

Peter Wolf is one of the few frontmen who can give Jagger a run for the money. As far as U.S. bands that embody elements of the Stones sound and style, I’d suggest The Replacements and Izzy Stradlin & The Ju Ju Hounds.

Centerfold and Freeze Frame. MTV schmaltz. The band lost my respect. A great band selling out. Just like ZZ Top going from a great band to doing crap like Legs. Or Steve Miller doing Abracadabra. How embarrassing.

Oeps, why didn't I know?
I ran into the guy (or he into me, who cares) when I was on my way to a great balcony front seat in the Boston Orpheum Theatre in 2002. I recognized him from the above mentioned Amsterdam Rolling Stones concert with J. Geils Band opening (after George Thorogood !). A really good band at the time.
Peter was just a nervous little man, who asked if I knew where his great friend Keith was ... Jeeh man, if I would know that ... (dressing room off course). He came over as making himself "very" important because "he was Keith's friend". A bit rediculous. A national treasure? Ask Mick: "Americans are funny people, first they drag you down and when you're famous they make you a hero" (can't clearly remember what he said in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame).
J. Geils Band the "American Rolling Stones" ... Naah. They were great, but so were Guns & Roses, The Doors, The Ramones, Jefferson Airplane, The Greatful Dead, etc.
Just remember ... The Rolling Stones are THE gift from our Universe and nothing will ever come close cool smileythumbs upspinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Yes.

Late 70’s and early 80’s America’s best live band.
They used to sell out a week at Pine Knob in the summer and blow the roof off of Cobo Hall in the winter. Detroit understood.

I wish Centerfold had never been written or recorded.

Peter Wolf is the best front man ever.

They're a great band live, sure. But America's Rolling Stones? Far from it.

America's Rolling Stones? No.
A great American band? Yes.

They were played continuously on the FM rock radio stations throughout the mid/late '70's - early '80's in the US.
I saw them open for the Stones in '81, and they were amazing - much better than the other two openers (George Thorogood and Prince).
After that they seemingly sort of gradually fizzled out the next couple of decades and became a time capsule of the '70's.
Fast forward, and they somehow decided to tour without their leader and founding member J.Geils himself!
That decision tainted their legacy big time IMO, but I still love all of their great tunes from the glory days.
Sadly J.Geils passed away several years ago, but their former greatness will live on for quite some time....

On the other hand, could the Rolling Stones be England's J. Geil's Band?

They were completely wonderful

Their gig at the Manchester Free Trade Hall in front of a mere smattering of punters was played as if it was a sold out Boston Gardens

And if you thought they were just a phemonenal live band (which they were) check out the songwriting smarts on Ladies Invited and Monkey Island

And they had great taste in covers (Funky Judge, I Do, Looking For A Love)

And Peter Wolf was married to Faye Dunaway - pure class

Saw Wolf open for Tom Petty on one of his last dates and it was a fantastic show

"Hey, what was the name of that chick with the long hair?"

Soooo many great live shows in the seventies.

America’s Rolling Stones?... nah.
But, arguably The Greatest American rock band of their era imo.

Peter Wolf, on any given night could rival Mick as the greatest rock front man.
Like the Stones, their live shows were something you had to be at to truly appreciate. ‘81 Seattle Stones shows w Geils opening still count amongst my favorites...
Best opening band for the Stones still imo.
