If you are talking about rockandroll music, it's got to be Keith Richards.He dedicated his musical career on that activity. The songs and the live shows are there to prove it; he has done very well for a long long time.

I love Keith, but for me, Rick Parfitt is the ultimate rhythm guitarist.

Yeah but you're right. That categorization rhythm and lead guitar only strictly applies to few bands. With most bands it's actually kinda mixed (as with the Stones, even during the Mick Taylor days it wasn't strictly Keith rhythm and MT lead). When there's only one guitarist, there are often elements of lead guitar and rhythm guitar mixed. But people feel the need to categorize and rank everything.

If you think that Paco de Lucía was a rhythm guitarist, you never heard it.... probably one of the best soloists.
