Midnight Rambler: do you prefer live or studio?
Posted by: keefgotsoul ()

Years ago, I would choose the live versions every time. However, I’ve been listening to the studio version lately and i have gained a new respect for it. It’s subtle and dark with layers of background vocals (don’t do that) and slide guitar I believe. Subtle background stuff. Live is completely vicious and aggressive. Almost as if they’re different songs entirely. Do you have a preference?

Live.

The Let It Bleed Version and the Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! version.

I like both the live versions and the studio version, for different reasons.

The Roadhouse-version is my favourite, with Atlantic City 89 as a strong contender.

I am fond of the 75 versions : some of them are so HEAVY you have the feeling you're trampled by the music.

They are almost two different songs. They are both good in different ways. Liked the live version (ya yas) best for many years, but now I play the studio version more often.

The live versions are the best. The studio version is dark and lifeless. My three favorites are Get Yer Ya Ya’s , London Roadhouse 1971and Brussels. It’s one of those songs which were played best with Taylor, just like Tumbling Dice is best with Wood

That song is exactly what it should be: A special studio take, and a live version that really breathes.

It should be noted that the only live song on "Hot Rocks" was Midnight Rambler from "Get yer Ya ya's out". We don't know if the Stones themselves believe the live version is better, but it was a brilliant move to add a live number to a greatest hits album that featured their studio version hits.

Definitely a both from me.

Honestly I wasn't keen on MR in the first years of my love for the Rolling Stones,
even in concert. It has completely changed, it's in my top 10.

I like both the studio version and the live versions.
It's a highlight of the show whenever they play it, I think.

The studio version is like a reference point that you can only go so far

I always liked the gloomy vibe that resonates with the lyrics on LiB.
The live versions like Yaya's and Brussels'73 are more like a killer punch. I listened to those versions mostly.

The Studio and Live Hyde Park69, Altamont, Ya Yas and Brussels are my favorite

The studio version is great and a bit different mainly thanks to Keith's slide work. With time the song evolved, my favorite is the Brusssels 73 version; excellent delivery and interplay.

The studio version is like a blueprint, and perfect by its own means. BRUSSELS '73 is like a final outcome and fullfilment of the potentiality of the song, like 'this is as far as you can go', perfect by its own means as well. If you add YA-YA'S and Roundhouse '71 there, you will see the greatest development of a rock song ever done.

Both versions are great, but it's gotta be the live one.

If you're putting together a Stones mix, take the studio version of "Midnight Rambler" and then segue right into "Break The Spell" for a definite mood-link that stretches across 20 years of Stones recordings.

Yes, I know. I'm an anomaly. Don't like Rambler. And think Shattered, Angie, and Beast of Burden are all amongst their worst songs. Not as bad as MAWGJ, but not far off.

I personally just find this song to be sooooooooo overrated.

Like dcba wrote, I also love the 1975 version (apart from the one in the "video-show". They're insane. But if I had to pick just one version, it would stilll be 1st show in Brussels 1973.

There are so much brilliant versions, I can't choose one. Let It Bleed, Ya-Ya's, Marquee Club '71, Roundhouse '71, Phili '72, Brussels '73, NY '75, LA '75, Bremen '76, Paris '76, Tokyo '90... This is a complete Rock Opera in one song.

Very well said. My absolute fav song. Truly a rock opera.

PS: Now I have to find Bremen 76.

The studio version is a disturbing blues opera. Live it's really the only number where they stretch out and adlib a little. Studio and live aren't even related to each other.
