Sad to hear this.

Their cover of Mother Popcorn turned me on to James Brown at a wee young age, like Zeppelin turned me on to the blues.

And yet THE STONES KEEP ROLLING!

P.S. Never say never.

Well they say touring, not performing or recording, so that certainly leaves the door open.

Vocal chords are a tenuous thing.

Sadness.
After AC/DC, the band that impressed me the most on stage. Powerful, precise, fun. And Steven Tyler, what a singer and showman.

I became a fan last year...found Pump, vinyl, cheap...and went on to earlier things...No more, no more! Love that song.

I read somewhere that No Nore No More was Steven Tyler’s favourite Aerosmith song.

Aerosmith were one of very few if not the only band that still brought it live up until the very end. Don’t take my word for it - all you have to do is watch a few minutes of their last 2023 show in New York.

Very proud that they decided to bow out and not take the route of lip syncing their way to finish the tour - the fans deserve better than that and the band knew it enough to call it off.

Did Steven have some help towards the end with background singers and a keyboardist helping - absolutely. But IMO the essence of Aerosmith live was there right until the very end and Tyler remained one of the absolute great frontmen in rock even in their last shows.

Thanks for the music boys!

I'm sure there will be lots of unreleased material to come, deluxe albums, etc. Joe can still do stuff with the Hollywood Vampires or even resurrect the Joe Perry Project.

When GET A GRIP came out, and the singles Cryin', Amazing and Crazy had become part of the paint of MTV society (even though I had the album I didn't listen to it like that madness), at one point a friend of mine called me and sang all three song titles to the same melody and burst out laughing:

They released the same single THREE TIMES!!! GENIUS!

What they had achieved with PUMP they mastered with GET A GRIP. Never again would they be as big etc. I had no idea that Geffen had rejected the album a year earlier and told them to make it better so they basically started over (The Cult did similar, although against the record label's wishes, in 1987).

Weirdly enough they were huge during the "grunge" "scene". They defied logic. They weren't of the ilk of hair metal bands that instantly died out thanks to Nirvana etc - they kept going.

They weren't stupid - their biggest fanbase was women *with their sugary ballads, the various movie soundtrack involvement to keep them "relevant").

Which explains why Def Leppard is still around.

I thought their best song was Chip Away At The Stone but I do still love me some songs like Love In An Elevator, F.I.N.E., Pink... sure, mostly the hit singles.

They were EXCELLENT at it - even with a little Desmond Child help. So what.

Bon Jovi did the same. Somehow Desmond Child went away, though.

Obviously that scene was over.

Aerosmith smartly held songs over - Deuces Are Wild was a leftover GRIP song used on a soundtrack - and then they did I Don't Want To Miss A Thing, complete schlock, huge single, and then were offered to do another, which they demoed but eventually passed on (The Cult wound up doing it with a tad touch of gothic to it, whereas the Aerosmith version, a laidback demo, is more hip-hop oriented with a hint of flamenco whispers but no dynamics at all yet still pretty damn good - I think it's really good - a full production might've ruined it but one will never know possibly - but Ian Astbury is a better singer, and The Cult's version is bigger ie more operatic), and, aside from a couple more singles, fell off the rock map.

The Cult opened for Aerosmith a couple of times.

Kinda funny little circle there.

PUMP is a fantastic album. Their best? Eh... it's certainly up there. Probably my favorite Aerosmith album.

The retirement isn't a surprise. Come on. Disappointing? Yes. But not a surprise. They were about to hang it up next year anyway.

I figure he can still kinda do it for something that's not a full show. Maybe he can even do a full show, just not a whole tour or set of shows. I doubt its the last time we ever see them, but clearly he can't sustain a tour.

I am surprised they didn't instead announce like one farewell show in Boston. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but that led me to think maybe he couldn't do a full show or it was potentially dangerous to risk one. But I do hope and expect we might still see him pop up for the occasional performance or two, which would obviously be a different circumstance than an Aerosmith tour or show.

Would be nice to have a farewell show, get some guest artists to sing some songs so he's only doing half a show perhaps?

They can't go out like that.

Can you imagine the Stones having a bunch of people show up to sing half the set list?

Tribute? With the actual band?

I dunno. I could see Tyler agreeing to such a thing, though, LOL.

Joe Perry etc can go play whatever tribute between now and 2050 or whatever but suggesting the lead singer not sing half the songs, why bother?

Talk about promoting 'Our lead singer can't sing anymore but come hang with us for $1200 a ticket for a special show and maybe he'll sing the last 3 songs!' - nope.

I'd kinda agree with the above. Either you can do the full show or you can't. If you can't, I'd be more than happy with them playing a short set of 5 songs on the streets of Boston or something like they did within the last 10 years. Cool little thing with low pressure just to do something cool. Honestly would be cool to just see them play with Joey Kramer again and that seems like something all 5 of them could handle for 20 minutes.

Something like this:

Well I haven't been in close consultations with his doctors, so you may of course possibly be right.

The band is still incredibly dysfunctional, especially after they fired Tim Collins (in 1996). The Steven you see on stage or incoherently babbling on TV? It's not an act. He really is that person 24/7 which makes him really hard to work with.

I am sure this has a lot more with tour insurance than whether he can sing any particular night. If they don't stand to pocket millions I don't see them doing the dance trying to get him to agree to show up anywhere to do anything.

Tom and Brad have been ready to retire, Joe can play with Hollywood Vampires and the Joe Perry Project. Joe can play with anyone really.

Has Steven publicly commented? I've seen the band statement but i didn't spot anything on Tyler's social media.

Sure, but to 90% of the public, who really wants to see anyone in Aerosmith but Steven? I don't like that they tour without Joey Kramer, but it doesn't affect sales. I like seeing the 5 original members, but Joe Perry is akin to Keith Richards to me. It feels right seeing him there, but he's not adding a ton. Almost everytime I've seen them Joe Perry doesn't sound great, and Whitford does the heavy lifting. Joe is the foil, but people go to see Aerosmith because of Steven and they sound good because of him and Brad. No one's forcing Tom Hamilton to not retire lol.

Steven got a lot of bad press for saying years ago he deserves more money than the rest of the band. But hell, he's totally right. Mick Jagger deserves more than the rest of the band IMO. Those two singers prop those bands up and I do feel, while I get the even split, in a true analysis of the situation, they wouldn't be wrong in wanting more than the other guys.

I was really looking forward to the Seattle show, almost more so because of the Black Crowes opening and it would’ve been a nice little getaway to Seattle taboot but I respect the decision because having no tour is far better than a final tour where you really can’t give it your all. Sidenote, recently saw Chris Stapleton and stayed in Pioneer Square and it was just so dead compared to when I was there in 2019 to see the Stones. Seems like it just hasn’t recovered economically down there, it’s a shame. However, I did get to see Willie Nelson live for the first time in my life and it was an absolute pleasure and an honor to witness that. 91 years old and still out there on the road.

I feel like they'll try, or at least repeatedly mention the idea of doing so in the press for the next 5 years, to do one final show. It's like Ozzy... he's retired but he can't stop talking about wanting to do a final show and feeling disappointed that he can't.

Re: OT: Aerosmith stuff

Who knows what to believe anymore? The reference to Ozzy is a good one. But yeah, just maybe he's hoping and wishing to do a tour. Maybe it's the same here. The wording of their "farewell message" is open. Sounds to me like there's no full tour but could be a record and maybe one or more performances as a possibility. Why not say this? That's my point.

Toys In The Attic was the 1st album I ever bought. Aerosmith = High School. Another band that makes up the soundtrack for so many lives.....sad but inevitable. They had a great run.
