Actually, it's not a binary; there are 3 basic findings possible:
Guilty,
Not Guilty, and
Innocent
A "not guilty" verdict does not mean that the defendant is innocent, only that there is not enough evidence to prove him or her to be guilty. Big difference, ask OJ.
So in fact, it's not unusual for a defendent to have committed a crime even while he or she is found "not guilty" because of a lack of evidence, a technicality, or an incompetent jury, prosecutor, or judicial system.
