Yes, it was very good actually. I would like to lend my voice to the cries to release the The Wandering Spirit - Charlie version.

Call it "Spirit of Charlie".

So... "WS" was started before "Steel Wheel". Who knew?
Not me for certain!

Nico hinted at that though...

"[19]880600C June and/or July: probably London, unidentified studio

MJ works on demos with RW (gtr), CW (dr), Jimmy Rip (gtr) and Doug Wimbish
(bass), incl.
- What Kind Of World Is This? (MJ) -unverified"

Yes, very interesting. Obviously in some respects Mick saw this solo career ahead of him and based on the positive reaction to Keith's album, set about to put together a bullet proof album himself. Got to love competition.

If Steel Wheels hadn't come about when it did, who knows where the history of this band would have ended.

Interesting Ronnie was also part of the initial sessions, according to Nico. Not something mentioned by Jimmy Rip, though.
Some of the Wandering Spirit songs is absolutely among the best Jagger wrote.
I guess he didn’t want to waste the tracks on The Stones? Well, actually he could have and made Steel Wheels a lesser compromising album.

-`cause it`s a solo album.

A version of Wandering Spirit with Charlie Watts on it?!?

Has this ever been discussed here before? Guitarist Jimmy Rip says Wandering Spirit first recorded with Charlie back in 1988 and then shelved and re-recorded twice after Steel Wheels Tour.

Fabulous interview and it confirms what Rock & Folk editor Philippe Manoeuvre wrote in 93 that there were three versions of WS. It wasn't clear at the time that they were so spaced out in time though!

It's crazy that Mick couldn't get it out earlier and tour it with apparently most of it already written in 88! Strange too that Matt Clifford is not mentioned at all when Vanity Fair called him Mick's "musical aide de camp" in 92 when they were recording Don't Tear Me Up in London...and then Clifford was barely on the released album, sounds like he was might have been held responsible for the failure of the second version...

Funny too that for all these years we thought that Mick had reused SW outtakes for WS when it was probably the other way around!

Now someone needs to convince Ripp to leak that stuff, the FFSO guys maybe since they've add to shelve their previous projects for some reason!

HA! Preinternet days! Well not really, but we sure as hell wouldn't have been on the internet then.

BV would have had to create a column in the IORR print magazine and we would have had to write letters to the editor to speculate.

I want a 30th Anniversary Box next year - 3 versions of the album, the Red Devils session and Webster Hall live. C'mon, Mick!

-Checked out the two first tracks for the first time on youtube. -A very familiar and often used tonality that I would call clichè.

Can't see it happening unless a lot of pressure is put on him to do it.

Even at his age , Mick's not really into retrospective anything !

He'd likely rather do something new outside of the Stones....

... but at this late stage in their career feels he probably ought to see that out first.

What's interesting is if one relies on the infos provided by the super-reliable Nico, Jagger did offer the 'Wandering Spirit’ songs to the Stones during the SW sessions.
They did rehearse "Sweet Thing" and (possibly)"Hang On Tonight", proof Mick was ready to nix his 3rd solo album in favor of the new Stones album. Apparently the honeymoon between Keef and Mick was so hot Keef also offered some solo outtakes to be rehearsed (like "Almost Hear You Sigh").

Ah nothing beats getting reacquainted with your loved one after 3 years of dispute... grinning smiley

SW is a decent enough album. Better than anything else they put out in the 80's except to TY, but imagine the best of WS and MO released thereafter, before VL...WOW. That would have been quite the back to back then with whatever it would have been called and then VL, B2B. A true latter day renaissance for sure then!!

That's exactly what I always bemoaned. Could have been a classic Stones album - the songs were there, just not used for the band. What a waste!

But as it stands, we'll probably never hear stuff like Evening Gown or Hate It When You Leave live again.
