’60s icon Ronnie Spector, who sang ‘Be My Baby,’ dies at 78

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ronnie Spector, the cat-eyed, bee-hived rock ‘n’ roll siren who sang such 1960s hits as “Be My Baby,” “Baby I Love You” and “Walking in the Rain” as the leader of the girl group the Ronettes, has died. She was 78.

Spector died Wednesday after a brief battle with cancer, her family said. “Ronnie lived her life with a twinkle in her eye, a spunky attitude, a wicked sense of humor and a smile on her face. She was filled with love and gratitude,” a statement said. No other details were revealed.

The Ronettes’ sexy look and powerful voices — plus songwriting and producing help from Phil Spector — turned them into one of the premier acts of the girl-group era, touring England with the Rolling Stones and befriending the Beatles.

Spector, alongside her sister Estelle Bennett and cousin Nedra Talley, scored hits with pop masterpieces like “Baby, I Love You,” “Walking in the Rain,” “I Can Hear Music” and “Be My Baby,” which was co-written by Spector, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich.

That voice.... There’s a few generations of folk who instantly know that drumbeat intro and Ronnies voice on Be My Baby.

This tears me up.

In late 1985 I had a front row center seat for the taping at the Pasadena Playhouse of a TV special she appeared on called Deja View.

During her segment she was up there at the edge of the stage, standing right in front of me. She looked fantastic.

When there were breaks between songs, she just stood up there waiting, and I was tempted to say something to her. I was sitting so close I wouldn't have even had to raise my voice!

But what do you say to an angel?

I was just too much in awe of her... and that sound when she sang.

Loved her.

Wow Rest In Peace Ronnie! She's reunited with Estelle now. Be My Baby is Brian Wilson's favourite song and he wrote Don't Worry Baby as a reply.

Rest in peace, Ronnie Spector.

I love the sound and evoking nostalgia of all those 60’s Phil Spector classics: Be My Baby, The Best Part Of Breaking Up, He’s A Rebel.

Ronnie was the real deal playing clubs in NYC with Joey Ramone. I saw them do a Christmas show at a club called LIFE, now Le Poussin Rouge back in the 90's
