A serial, according to the presenter (Nina Hagen), with the next episode to be broadcast in 2002. I must have missed that, but am looking forward to episode 3 this year.

A really fine documentary in those days. I clearly remember seeing it for the first time. We made jokes about "who will make a documentary on "the last 20 years"?
40 years of Rolling Stones? You must be kidding ...
Now we don't even have to bother about "the first 50 years" anymore ...
Let's make a beginning with "the first 60 years" then ...
Yes, the FIRST 60 years, because the second 60 years will obviously be as "virtual reality ROLLING STONES" grinning smiley to be decided by our grand-grandchildren.

Thanks a lot!
Back in time I recorded it on VHS and couldn't watch it again. Tried to find it, unsuccessfully, online years ago - as I remembered it as a good documentary and most important for me at that time.

It was a pleasure watching it again.

A serial, according to the presenter (Nina Hagen), with the next episode to be broadcast in 2002.

In 2002 there was the Let It Bleed documentary made by the Austrian filmmakers Rudi Dolezal & Hannes Rossacher (DoRo) and was broadcasted on 14-Jul-2002 by French/German TV-Channel arte.

That was a nice watch! My German had some difficulties occasionally, but that's alright. Pretty impressive how much different footage and clips they were able to gather together. Surely almost every bit is familiar now, but at the time that must been a thrill to see. Still there were bits I never seen before (like that long footage of young Mick climbing in his father's tv show), and, of course, almost all the interviews.

There was an English documentary 20 YEARS ON (or something called like that) from the same year, shorter but otherwise pretty similar. I guess that was the time when these kind of 'capturing the whole tale' documents started to pop up (you know, having all those Beatles vs. Stones things, 1967 busts, Brian's death, Altamont, EXILE, etc. in one package). Seemingly those were the only items the band contributed to notice "20th Anniversary", otherwise it was business as usual: the band touring, a new live album, and "Start Me Up" and TATTOO YOU still fresh in mind. That's it.

But oh boy, what a moment in their career that was. The history - even the legendary 60's - was not that far yet, and the band still I think the document pretty well captures how the Stones were seen at the time: they were like winners of history, and there still had a certain magical, mythical aura over them. The 80's hadn't really happened yet, and they were still somehow musically relevant.

It is odd to think that it's been 40 years and the band still exists. But if we are honest, probably the tale - what makes the Stones da Stones - was already told by then - both musically and culturally - and there's not been much to add. Since then they have lived off from what they had achieved in those fisrt 20 years, and rightly so. In CROSSFIRE HURRICANE 20 years they later told the same story as DIE ERSTEN 20 JAHRE but from 'inside'. For 25X5 they added the 80's WW3 to emphasize and promote the big come back of 1989. Since then what? Huge tours one after other playing mostly songs from the first 20 years, the difference between them that the dudes just gradually start looking more and more senior-like. Bill's departure, finally Charlie's passing, both replaced by faceless side men. Some Mick-Keith drama (the todgergate, oh please...). A few albums with no memorable songs in them to compare anything to the first 20 years. I wouldn't mind seeing one, but I think what makes this kind of document just a deep hardcore fan item is that : (a) a total irrelevance to the zeitgeist, (b) lack of great, memorable songs together with no musical evolotion and variance; (c) a gradual transformation into some sort of nostalgia act (the last ten years). I think to make an interesting document of the years since 'WW3' - all those Cohlian huge tours, then 50th Anniversary that took the next 10 years - that I think would ask a whole different approach to the subject than just list the events (a tour after tour).

But back to DIE ERSTEN 20 JAHRE: the most memorable moment is the one Keith discussing Brian, trying to say something critical, but keeping a little pause, like not really finding right words, and end ups saying, with a smile and eyes full of empathy, "he was a nice guy".

I like the final scene in which Nina Hagen (german punk singer) points out that it is a series production. (Die Ersten 20 Jahre, The First 20 Years, broadcasted in 1982). Her closing words: "Ladies and Genltleman, this is a series production, please switch on again later." After all, there could now be parts 2 and 3...

I still have it on VHS.
Timing was so perfect when it came out.
Right before the start of the Europe Tour '82.
Made by Dolezal/Rossacher those two geniuses from Austria who made so many famous and awarded band videos in their career. For almost 40years. In fact the were the Rolling Stones of video-making.
This film here was there breakthrough.
When they showed the final cut to the Stones Keith was about to die of getting no air in his lung, so much he laughed about the scene of 12year old Mick showing on TV how to climbe up the rocks. He left the cutting room in order to get some fresh air on th the street.
Right after that TV premiere the Stones came themselves. Live. On Tour. For 3 month.
I was 21. And Hannover June 6 was my first Stones show ever.
And the VHS was in the recorder for whole year.

hi caschimann,

i had this on vhs too and played it over and over again,
was 21 years old too, and i went to the waldbühne in berlin june 8th :-)

i made the biggest mistake of my life:
at this time i didn't want to share MY stones with other people,
so i sold my ticket, could you believe that ?

i had on vhs too "mick jagger in paris (1985)", 45 minutes,
cannot find this on youtube, so sorry because i don't have it anymore.

My favourite is Bill Wyman saying: "We're getting better and better. Wait till 1990!" And everybody in the room is laughing.
Dolezal and Rossacher are probably best known for their videos of Queen and Falco's Rock Me Amadeus.

The best scene of "Mick in Paris '85" is the opening scene:

Mick is driving around Paris Charles de Gaule Airport in a tiny Renault 205 to find a place where he can pick up TV-journalist Jools Holland.
Jools is standing there already looking around for a big limousine expecting Mick drives Mercedes Benz, Cadillac, Rolls Royce etc.
Mick discovers Jools Holland and starts honking. Jools discover that little Renault making the noise but doesn'nt react to it, thinking he would not be meant.
So Mick is leaning out the window, yelling: "Jools, I am here!"
Jools Holland could not believe his eyes and walks up to the Renault and Mick.
Cut.
Both inside the car. Mick tries to get out of the airport traffic yam.
Jools is still upset:
"You are the biggest Rockstar in the world and I cannot believe you pick me up with this little shitty french car!!"
Mick laughs loud. But the explains:
"Thats the way surely nobody would recognize me!"
Jools still shaking his head.
Mick shouting at the driver in the car next to him who has just taken the right of way.

Enjoyed watching it very much. They got some rare footage I've never seen before and impressive list of people to interview for this docu. I just wished there were English subs available because my Deutsch is very poor to understand everything they were talking about.
