At least we know now what it takes to make them drop a super warhorse. What would have happened if they had been forced to drop 5-6 of them? A setlist meltdown?

What are you talking about? Honky Tonk Women had a manga style cartoon.

your right it was a manga/anime/hentai style animation used in 2002/03

i believe jah is referring to the montage played during the voodoo lounge tour

if you look for the htw from the proshot video of oakland 1994 you'll see the mammy cartoon mixed into it

Well, I was watching this video and – oh man – one day they're going to find out that most of the Stones' songs (not necessarily the Stones themselves) are chauvinistic, sexist, etc.
And then may the Lord have mercy on us / the Stones

Was not the Eric Clapton version recorded after the album version

No, the Clapton version was recorded in 1969. The album version is from 1970.

I though the Clapton version was recorded on Keith's birthday in 1970?
While I'm here I also thought Jahisnotdead's post was excellent.

The fault with that video is rather that there are only white chicks in it. No beautiful black, latina, middle eastern, japanese, chinese, indian or other ladies. And the only ones who are not white are cartoons! Strange.

I understand that couple 100%.

Have to agree with you on that, it certainly is a personal favorite of mine as well. I certainly don't think as someone mentioned that they had just simply gotten tired of playing it, I believe there was more to it then just that. We can all guess and give opinions about why they didn't play it this go round but I most definitely would like to see it played again at some point going forward.

I will never forget Brown Sugar on a juke box, with the bass bouncing off the wall it was shoved up against, in a pool hall, on a hot, humid summer night in Buckhead, Atlanta, 1971. They sounded like rock pirates.

It seems they shocked audiences by what they played and how they looked 60 years ago, then they shock audiences now by what they DON'T to play. They are in that nearly untouchable category where all media coverage is good, so whether it was Mick Jagger having a beer incognito in North Carolina or dropping “Brown Sugar” from the setlist, America was paying attention to a band that hasn’t had a hit in four decades and has only done a couple dozen shows in the last few years. That’s something.

And with so little variation in setlists, it might be okay with a lot of us if they pulled a few more of the overplayed tunes. Were folks this worked up when they willingly self-censored, pledging not to play“Brown Sugar”, “Beast of Burden”, “Let's Spend the Night”, “Honky Tonk Women” and “Rough Justice” when they went to China a few years back?

I don't expect "Some Girls" or "Star Star" to get much rotation again, either.

Hopefully it will be sweet and short, not the drawn out way it's been the last however many decades, if/when they play it again.

I'm no schoolboy but I like this song. Lyrically, I think it is one of Jagger's best efforts. I reckon it would have suited Steve Jordan's drumming style.

Nico Zentgraf has the Clapton one in 1969. But the date was indeed December 18:

691209A 9th, 10th & 18th December: London, Olympic Sound Studios. Producer: Jimmy Miller.
Sound engineer: Glyn Johns.
- Brown Sugar III (MJ/KR) -STU on piano; partly to be heard in Gimme
Shelter-movie, released on Hot Rocks (by mistake on 1st pressings only!)
- Brown Sugar IV (MJ/KR) -STU on piano; Bobby Keys on sax, Al Kooper and
Eric Clapton on guitars (18th December); Sticky Fingers Deluxe-version

They should put it as the last song again and open up with Satisfaction, I can hear them two chords and yeah yeah yeah all night long when they finish with it. When last in the set the outro becomes hypnotic, but in a party kind of way. Hypnotic joy I'd call it smileys with beer

Doesn't the Fonda Theater rendition of Brown Sugar clock in at around eight minutes? I'm in agreement that it needs to be trimmed a little. If they were to ever open with it - which they wont! - I would imagine that it'd have to be a shorter rendition, like when they did so during some of the Licks tour stadium shows. When did these longwinded, drawn-out performances start, anyway? I don't recollect any pre-2012 performances having noticeably overly long outro's.

I don’t like the prolonged ending of Satisfaction when the song is played for the encore. Therefore I enjoyed it more either as the show opener (“B2B Tour”) or just another in-the-setlist song (“VL Tour”).
On the contrary, with regard to Brown Sugar, I love the repeated mass chant of “Yeah, yeah, yeah, woo!” It’s so euphoric I wish it would never end. To each their own.

I'm also a fan of the yeah yeah, woo. Like SFTD the concert experience is energized by the crowd involvement. I'm happy to hear the Charlie chanting last year, as it's been tradition. But maybe it's not there this year if there's a tour. That would be missed by me.

I think "All the rage" would have been pretty decent in BS's place..........

Also, I noticed that except for 2 renditions, they also dropped iorr from the setlist.........

Aren't a lot of Stones songs offensive in some way. Isn't that why they made "respectable" I mean where does it end. You wouldn't got to see Dave Chapelle without hearing the "n" word. Just saying.

The album version was recorded at Muscle Shoals before the Clapton one, and overdubs like the sax were done later

Right, in that case I simply interpreted the Nico Zentgraf site wrong. He does note the Muscle Shoals early versions (two of them) but also specifically says that the Sticky Fingers version was only made in 1970. The database entry says "Final mixing" was done in April 1970 and that there were three separate mixes of the song made at Olympic.

My apologies!

Not the first time Mick and me are wrong winking smiley

I think we should see this as an opportunity to get Miss You out of the set list for awhile!:-)

We have underage references (miss you child), excessive drinking, irresponsible behavior and racial stuff with the puerto rican girls ;-)

someone somewhere has got to take massively offense to that!

Just saying! ;-)

I personally have never cared for live IORR after the 75 tour. I really loved the 1975 lurching chugging version. Never cared much for it from 76 on live, always seemed too fast and it changed the DNA of the song.

The studio version is fantastic with the slinky slow build up. Underrated in my opinion.

Next thing you know, they'll play an instrumental Vegas style version without vocals as an intro/opener, and then Mick runs out on stage as they switch gears and burst in to Street Fighting Man.
