Stones 1981-82 tempo

I had a short listen to some of the tracks from the London '82 show on the Tattoo Deluxe. The tempo seemed a lot faster than say ...Hampton '81 (on of my all time fav show). I recall the film Let's Spend The Night Together where they audio was apparently sped up. Anyone else notice this? Thoughts?

I was ar Wembley in '82. I recall how revved up the whole show seemed to be. When I heard Hampton for the first time many years ago it seemed less energetic and then when Leeds came out it sounded much more ballsy. I think '82 rocked harder in general but I don't know why that would be.

From what I’ve heard, I do concur with bakersfield; Leeds ‘82 is ballsy, raw and very frantic. It’s a performance like no other, I feel. I was lukewarm towards the 1981-82 tour, but the official release of this show really gave me a more positive perspective. The official Wembley release is wonderful, too. Not quite as good as Leeds for me, though Ronnie’s guitar on Jumpin’ Jack Flash is utterly terrific at the Wembley show. I haven’t heard enough the U.S. leg to determine for myself whether they were a little more subdued in comparison to Europe and the U.K., but perhaps it’s the case. Hampton is marvellous, of course.

The audio from TY Deluxe has the same speed as the old Wembley Video "The Waiting Is Over". So they really played faster than 81.

The LSTNT DVD is sped up unfortunately, makes the fast versions of songs even faster. Even when you look at the running time on the box, it's not as long as the VHS.

I have loved the Hampton show for as long as I know, but listening to Wembley on the
Tattoo You Super Deluxe, I am especially pleased with the return of Bobby on sax.
Ernie Watts (Hampton) might technically be a better player (not sure), but Bobby has
a great way to add not too much to a song. Less is better, most of the times.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

In 82, I think the sound mix was better, and they may have played "harder" but there were no truly inspiring moments like in 81. So in that sense it was flat by comparison. Re: the tempo, as I always like to say, by 82 they didn't need to speed up the tape to sound like they did on LSTNT.

I thought they were speeded up as they neared the end of a two year tour.

Hated the fast tempo. It just seemed like they wanted to get done and get out of there

Why would they ‘speed-up’ individual performances, though? If they’re collective minds were elsewhere and they were cruising on autopilot, then why not just shorten the set-list? That’s what they’ve done since 1990. I remember being surprised when they only performed 19 songs during the Euro and U.K. Licks shows. Now I know it’s pretty much the norm.

I think they were just hot and lathered up from being on the road for two years. Like in '73, and '99.

Let it Bleed from Wembley ‘82 is one of the best things I’ve ever heard, period.

One of the best ever . Keith's guitar break near the end is pure RnR .

The '82 tour was faster than the end of the '81 tour from my observations.

The beginning of the '81 tour was a faster tempo than the end of the '81 tour from my memory of Philadelphia '81. '81 developed in to a slower groove whereas the beginning of the tour picked-up from where the '78 tour left off. Listen to Ron's solo on You Can't Always Get What You Want in Philly and compare it to Hampton. They're much different. '81 Philly reminds me of Love You Live solo.

excellent point exile!

The beginning of the '81 tour does sound like where '78 left off. It sound like a different tour that Hampton 81.
