Rolling Stones Albums vs. Beatles Albums Discussion [PART I]
Posted by: JordyLicks96 ()
Date: December 16, 2021 23:49

Just thought I'd start a friendly discussion/debate and pair up every Stones album with its Beatles counterpart. For example, the Stones' first album England's Newest Hitmakers against the Beatles' first album, Please Please Me. Going to go all the way up to the Beatles last album and won't be including the album Yellow Submarine. Will post the next matchup every other day or so. Remember, I am doing this to start a friendly discussion/debate for the holidays!!

I'm going with Please Please Me as the overall better album.

So with that, the first matchup!!:

To be fair, in terms of songwriting, and being musical geniuses, I think The Beatles always owned the Stones big time when both bands existed.. and they helped them get started by writing I Wanna Be Your Man for them.

Technically, if you start with England's Newest Hitmakers, then you should put Introducing... The Beatles or Meet The Beatles! for comparison.

Otherwise the pair should be The Rolling Stones vs. Please Please Me.

Musical geniuses---who made truckloads of crappy songs. You fell hard for the hype.To be fair, that's embarrassing.

I have a random thought that the Beatles sound almost generic, but the Stones at their best a very exciting sound.
As for the 1st albums…. Beatles very polished even early on. The Stones sound more raw somehow..

7 best Stones albums, The big 4, Tattoo You, and 2 others compare favorably in terms of song writing with the best 7 Beatles albums. The Beatles wrote lots of dreck .Half of the White Album is crap:BungalowBill, Glass Onion, Piggies, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Honey Pie, Revolution 9 Sexy Sadie,,Rocky Raccoon.Sgt Pepper has crap like Benefit of Mr Kite, Good Morning, WhenIm 64, Lovely Rita… There’s plenty of other crappy songs on their other albums like Your Mother Should Know, Run for Your Life, Maxwells Silver Hammer, For You Blue, Good Day Sunshine

Yup. I’ll go with the stones over the Beatles with this one for that energy.
Please please me has some really soppy pop stuff on there.

The Beatles “invented” the album genre in that it wasn’t a hit single and 11 other fillers. Everything, every song has its place. I give them that.

The Stones though “attacked” the album genre and created a real, full, lithe and rocking rock and roll album here.

Stones 1, Beatles 0

The Beatles started in 1956,and the Stones in 1962.So you really can’t compare them in 1964.A better comparison would be Beatles1957-1970 and Stones 1962-1978.

I agree, but Lennon and McCartney started writing in 1957.Jagger and Richards not until 1964.A better comparison would be 1964vs1971

I'm picking the US albums for the Stones and the UK albums for The Beatles as those are the most popular markets for them commercially.

England's Newest Hitmakers is far superior to Please Please Me!

Please has some great songs!
I Saw Her Standing There, Misery, Do You Want to Know a Secret, etc.

but England's has incredible songs, starting w/ Not Fade Away, Route 66, Honest I Do, Little By Little, King Bee ...

Stones 1, Beatles 0

Understandable that you do. However, as to the Stones, I as a European, who bought the Decca albums during the 60s, don't even know the US counterparts' contents, without looking at Album Talk threads. Even if I were to do so, I still would not at a personal level fully relate to those releases, and what they comprise.

So that makes me one of those, that will abstain from posting, maybe read some posts, others not, without looking at track listings. Not meant as an objection on my part, go ahead.

Should and could be quite informative!

...how about we jump ahead a little to 1996?

The war still rages as the two legends continue to fight it out on the charts...

The Rolling Stones Rock N' Roll Circus vs. Beatles Anthology 3

This is very difficult. Whilst I probably enjoy both equally, Please Please Me is seemingly for more critically revered. It’s such an iconic statement: from the picture sleeve, to the story of the recording session. Regarding the Stones’ debut: I feel that London butchered the sleeve and ruined the track-listing. Not having Route 66 as that opener, ruins the dynamic and explosive urgency. It’s the artwork that really gets me, however. By having ‘England’s Newest Hitmakers’ plastered on, London has really missed the whole point: no words were necessary.

The UK albums are as nature intended. The early US albums are hodgepodge releases created by the record companies to make the most out of the material, omitting certain tracks to save them for other releases, having singles on albums etc.

So if you want a fair comparison, do UK-UK or US-US, otherwise it makes little to no sense at all.

Exactly-Beatle heads always tell me how “influential” they were and how they took music in so many different directions, ok great.I’m sure if you were doing acid in 1967 this was amazing stuff but it doesn’t hold up.
If the Beatles weren’t the first big English band they would be the Kinks.
When you bring out Gimme Shelter, Sympathy for the Devil, Midnight Rambler Jumpin Jack Flash etc it’s a complete wipeout in favor of The Stones.
