OK.

So... no video, pics, literature.

I'll help you:

Fifty-two years ago today, a Hells Angel, hired by the Rolling Stones to provide “security” at the band’s era-defining free festival in the East Bay, stabbed a Black concertgoer to death in front of Mick Jagger. Three other people also died that infamous night.

Much has been written about December 6, 1969.

Wasn't it the Grateful Dead that contacted the Angels?

I read recently it was the Ungrateful Living that got the Angels involved.

The day when "Flower Power" ended. If not before, rock 'n' roll has lost its innocence that day.

If the Dead did play, imagine how late the Stones would have gone on stage!

I always understood the Stones delayed anyway for the sun to do down, and this delay added to the bad atmosphere.

52 years. Wow.

They did play late. There were hours between CSN and The Stones. They waited till the scheduled time they were to go on. Who’s decision? I don’t know.

This time of year in California the sun is down by 4:30 in the afternoon. I still remember how I found out about this. It was like a week later and I was in a convenience store, reading a Newsweek magazine. Same way I found out about Jim Morrison dying in 1971. Hendrix was national news, on the evening broadcasts.

Supposedly, Bill missed the helicopter because he out shopping in SF and had to make his own way out to Livermore. So the Stones were waiting on him, plus waiting for night to arrive - must have been early evening (after 6) when they went on.

Okay, I confess — I think I read that in Sonny Barger’s biography.

Responsible. And The Stones should've started earlier just to get it over with as soon as possible. With or without Bill (or with a stand-in). And anyway, people wouldn't have noticed anyone else on stage except Jagger. By the time The Dead refused to play everybody knew what kind of the bad situation there was going on.

Wasn't Sam Cutler the one who organized the hiring of the Angels just to keep people off the generators and stage? According to him they never were hired as security.

I heard the Dead used them routinely and suggested it to the Stones. Who actually "hired" them I have no idea...

Just to clarify......the picture above posted by Gaslightstreet, was taken in daylight. The Stones waited until the sun went down before playing therefore this picture is not of any events that happened when the Stones were on stage.

It is however representative of the violent thugs who were there that day.

Remember this is just a few weeks before winter solstice. Sundown was probably around 5:00 PM. Early. I don’t know what time they actually came on.
