(A Group Called) Smith does a couple of Rolling Stones covers that are pretty good. There might not be many of you who remember them as they only had a couple of albums back in the late sixties, maybe early seventies. Still, a decent band for sure.

Some amazing cover versions championed in this thread, some awful ones too.

Not mentioned so far is my absolute favourite: "No Expectations" by John Hartford. There is an excellent version of that song by Jim Rooney as well. And you may want to check out "Hide Your Love" and "Out Of Time" by Justice Hahn. Plus "Dead Flowers" by Townes Van Zandt who himself was one of the greatest songwriters, of course, on a par with Hank Williams and Bob Dylan.

I've always thought Johnny Adams version of Salt of the Earth was one of the
great Rolling Stones covers.

Was 14 years old listening to (at the time) the greatest band in my own little world, Guns N Roses live in Argentina 1993. Out of nowhere came out a cover of Dead Flowers and I thought to myself, what is this bullshit and more importantly where do I get more of it! I had to drag my uncool, unhip dad into my bedroom and ask if there was a 1 in 1,000,000 chance he knew who sang this amazing song Dead Flowers? I remember my Dad put his arm around me and said "boy, today you become a man" My dad took me down into his man cave and showed me all his Rolling Stones vinyl and started playing them for me... I was in heaven! A few weeks later my dad took me down to Sam The Record Man to grab Voodoo Lounge the day it came out. That day I started my obsession with the Stones and never looked back!
