what guitar is k richards playing on midnight rambler from get yer ya yas out? gibson black beauty? m taylor on gibson sg?

I don't know. What I do know is that this recording is about the best interplay between Richards and Taylor I have ever heard.

Seems like Richards used MT's Les Paul for open tuning (HTW). That means it could either be the Dot, Dan A., or the custom. In this picture: [www.google.com] (scroll down)
he use a capo, so maybe...

I'm sure there's been multiple threads where posters like Mathijs have already gone over this, but generally the guitars used for the tour were:

-Les Paul Custom, open G, capo 4th for Flash, Street Fighting Man




-Sunburst Les Paul, open G for Honky Tonk and Taylor's use on Love in Vain





-SG, used by Taylor for all other songs



-Dan Armstrong, standard tuning for most songs, capo 7th for Rambler





-ES-355, all pictures I've seen show Keith using it in standard, I don't remember ever seeing Taylor using it but he may have, and it may possibly have been used for Rambler or in open G as a backup



-ES-330, haven't seen any pictures of it on stage, but you can see Taylor using it during rehearsals in Stephen Stills' basement and backstage during the tour:





-National Resonator, used for Prodigal Son and You Gotta Move



-Harmony 12 string acoustic, probably used for Prodigal Son and You Gotta Move at the second Boston show, 11/29/69. Obviously I'm not 100% on this without photographic proof, but if you listen to the audience recording, particularly the start of You Gotta Move, it definitely sounds like octave strings are being hit. Here's a shot of Keith tuning it up at Altamont:



-Epiphone acoustic, don't think it was ever used on stage but they had it with them during the tour:



As for Bill, you can see him using a Vox bass in that basement rehearsal photo above, but on stage I've only seen Fender Mustang basses in Competition Orange and Blue:





I assume Bill was given a Dan Armstrong bass in 69, but I've never seen him using it during the tour.

There is a photo of Keith with a ES; but the other photo of MT is not a Gibson, but an Epiphone casino. Just take a look to those P90s pickups

The Casino and 330 models were nearly identical, but Keith’s Casino had black P90s. Taylor is shown playing the 330 with chrome covered P90s that was used by Brian on the 67 tour and by Keith at Hyde Park.

My guess would have been he was about to whistle during Miss You, but I think I may be a bit off on the historical timeline.

As awesome as it is, I get why people (might) prefer the GYYYO! version.

I've never heard a bad version of MR. MR certainly evolved between 1969 and 1973. And it's continued. The July 7 1990 sticks out, for me, in the Ronnie era. It's one song that has found a way to stay true throughout the years unlike JJF, HTW, Brown Sugar, Satisfaction, SFM, Miss You, SFTD and Start Me Up.

That said, the prototype Keith had in his first DA had two rows of pole pieces, thus not resembling a P-90 (the Rock Treble equivalent) but appears to resemble the Sustain Treble pickup they later designed. Sound wise the Sustain Treble sounds more like Keith in 1969 than the Rock Treble.

Keith did receive a number of new pickups in 1970, and used the Rock Treble in his second DA guitar.

In El Ejido, Spain 2007 I had a priviledge to hear it live first time - yeah, all my dreams came true then as far as song wishes go. Although I've seen them probably six or seven times by then, I hadn't been that lucky to hear "Midnight Rambler", since it was not a show constant by any means at the time. But then there they had a couple of screw ups there, and some parts didn't work that well. But bad? Nope.

God Bless You Mathijs , for this most important information ! To me the Rock Treble pickup sounds and comes across like a juiced up humbucker like it is a really fat sound which of course sounds most excellent . Maybe I am wrong that it is like a P90 which I have not had the pleasure of playing a Gibson with a P90 in it . My tech Bless his hands last year found a way to make the bridge in the Dan Armstrong stay in tune as whenever I bent a note she instantly went out of tune and all it took was some double sided tape underneath the bridge and the way my tech made it out to seem that it was stupid easy to do this . Great guitar with such a thick tone , but heavy as the plexiglass body weighs plenty . Great feel on the neck as it has a really nice feel sort of like a Gibson neck with the 12 degree fingerboard radius . Mine came with the Rock Treble in it , which I did not think I would bond with and with the Country Treble pickup which I have not tried , as I don't want to mess around with a 1969 first year issue Dan Armstrong . Did you know she comes with a Brazilian fingerboard and a Ivory nut ? I had read up on this instrument several lifetimes ago and when I got her I took one look at the nut and said what the heck is that ? Just ivory is all , which does not look like bone or nylon as those are the usual material that nuts are made of save for brass nuts . Thanks for your help ! P.S. you are so right about how the Rock Treble pickup does not sound like keith's sustain pickup at all . Also I would love to share photos with you as I am unable to post them here . If you like shoot me your E-MAIL if you like . I forgot to mention that the tuning issue stems from having a moving bridge and that's exactly where the double sided tape did the trick to now keep her perfectly in tune .

Do you know if the BBC recording from 1990 was from July 7th? That was my first Stones gig but they also played quite a few other ones at Wembley that summer. I was also at the last one which turned out to be Bill's last gig. Have always wondered if the BBC recording is from either of those shows. Or could it be that they recorded all the Wembley shows and just picked the best versions of each song?

I do not know which guitars were played where but Midnight Rambler from Ya Ya's is one of my favorites. They are just smoking after the 7:30 time.

I think Midnight Rambler love was best with Taylor/Richards.Ya Ya’s version, London Roundhouse and Brussels73 are fantastic.But I think other songs like Tumbling Dice and Honky Tonk women were done better with Wood

And to add -listening to Stray cat and comparing it to the guitar sound of Carol the ES-355 could very well also be used on Stray Cat.
