Doom and Gloom vs. Pump It Up (by Elvis Costello)?

I just heard that Elvis Costello's song in the movie Film Stars Don't Die In Hollywood (2017) and to me it sounded there were certain similarities between the two songs. Has anyone else noticed this before?

Just curious...

Well, yeah, they both have a punk beat. To my ears, Costello has the better song. Doom and Gloom sounds too noisy, too frantic, as if the Stones are trying to make a point (we're still relevant) rather than letting the song flow.

The main difference is Pump it Up is a great song, while Doom and Gloom is pretty bad...and Mick's vocals are really bad.

Pump it Up is a "great song"? Since when? I rank it slightly below average.
Doom & Gloom, although not what I would call great, is still very good!

Escape Club - Wild Wild West: Oh yeah. Tryin' too hard to be avante garde, chi chi, visually clever while musically derivative. Oddly enough, it made me think of another song that went for clever and avante garde, nothing to do with the Stones/Costello thing, but a cool song except for, IMHO, the gun effects toward the end which I now find a bit much:

Big Audio Dynamite - Medicine Show

And, now, I think I'll go put the director's edition of "The Good, The Bad, The Ugly" into the old DVD player. A great movie, in another one of my humble opinions.

I hear why people think The Cult's Love Removal Machine is like Start Me Up.

But it's not.

At all.

They have other songs that are like someone else but not on their deal. Got released. OK. Even Billy was "Okay, yeah, but..."

The riffage in Doom is not much different than some riffage in other Stones songs. It's just more so than others.

The similarity to Pump It Up... zero. EC sings the main verse parts in a...whatever, blues fourth/seventh. That's the ONLY similarity in regard to Doom And Gloom.

Does EC sound like Billy Joel on Radio Radio? If you want it to it does.

Exactly, the beginning sounds similar...until the Stones add the little something that explains why they're still around and "relevant" (in the sense that they're a magnet for audiences) 60 years down the road, unlike Costello or these Wild Wild West guys!

Pump It Up has always been one of my favorite rock songs. It has such an intense beat. I didn't notice any similarity between the two songs, other than the driving beat.
