What about politesse? A word that no dictionary knows. Does he mean politeness or what? Was it ever questioned or explained?

Isn't it about one's political body?

In the German language Politesse is the designation for a female parking enforcement officer, which however doesn't fit here.

Give me the truth now
Don't want no shame
I'd be hung drawn and quartered for a sheep
Just as a well as a lamb

WTF?

Some of his lines really make you wonder if Mick has a confused or expanded grip on religion

In England a few hundred years ago punishment for minor crimes was severe - ie. Deported to Australia for stealing a loaf of bread.

Hung, drawn and quartered was usually reserved for heresy, treason or witchcraft.
Mick probably used it because it's England's most notorious punishment assimilated into everyday usage - ie. Oh, I'm late home from the pub, the wife is going to hang, draw and quarter me.

Hanging was as you expect, but not 'til death, then drawn which meant having your stomach opened with a sword, drawn from your solar plexus down to your groin, so your inardds fell out, then quartered, pull apart by a horse on each limb, or all four limbs chopped off. (all while still alive - harsh)

What Mick means is if you are going to be punished like that, it may as well be for a stealing a sheep rather than something smaller, like a lamb.

I ain’t signifying’

I hear the word ‘signifying’ in a lot of blues songs but I have no idea what it means

I love Jigsaw Puzzle but....

“With his methylated sandwich, he's a walking clothesline” - Wtf?

“I'm just trying to do my jig-saw puzzle, bfore it rains anymore” - If he’s inside lying on the floor what does he care if it’s raining?

“And the bass player he looks nervous, about the girls outside” - Least nervous around women of any bass player anywhere ever, he should have been MORE nervous in fact....

And the whole last verse could be a reference I don’t get, but I don’t get the last verse really either.

The whole piece is a bit stream of conscious so I take it as such.

Alcoholics/tramps would often use bread to dip into
such things as warmed up boot polish or Metho as a way of consuming the alcohol

Walking clothes line -- slang for wearing clothes
straight off clothes line ... not ironed -- clumbled ...

That's not poor writing, it is just not supposed to be taken too seriously. Just as you should not take anything of for example 'Shattered' seriously. It's only rock'n'roll, it's supposed to be fun.

Walking clothes line...he's as thin as a clothes line, presumably from drug use, or it could also be a reference to being strung out from drugs, as a clothes line is strung up.

In 1986 I was studying English at university. We had a lecturer from Cambridge, very 'English' from head to toe and always open to argue about who's better Beatles or Stones. He was into the Beatles.
Funny thing was that we were doing a course on phrases, slang and proverbs at the time of Dirty Work. Was it mere coincidence that I suddenly had a clue about what Mick was singing?! He refused to confess.
Seems, the Beatles had no new record out then to quote from...

WTF?

Actually... as bad as that is, Mick could've said 'cow as well as veal', it really could kinda made sense more so in the 2020-2021... uh, differences in how the older are not necessarily lambs (young sheep) but, well... a kind of equivalent to people on horseback in England kind of not lamb but... chasing after something... while acting like sheep? Kinda "Once upon a time you were my baby chicken..." trip.

It's an old English expression. Mick uses clichés a lot.

What I've always been wondering about is where idea for paint it black came from. They were too young to witness it themselves but Mick found exact words to describe that dark and deep depression you feel after losing someone really close and loved one.
