Stones' lyrics that ya don't know the meaning
Posted by: Elmo Lewis ()

Many to discuss, but let's start with "Winter":

Bell, book, and candle - some kind of academic reference?

Restoration plays - Shakespeare?

Please help me with these and list your own.

I may not be the first, or 5th, or 20th whatever, but I'll get back to this at some point. I dig it.

I don't understand "Till the next time we say goodbye, I'll be thinking of you". Wouldn't it be "Till the next time we say Hello?" Or am I over thinking it ?

I guess he doesn’t think of her when he’s with her. That’s Mick

Never really thought about it, but you're correct! It should be "hello"

I think it is right as it is..........

I think he means, 'til the next time (we meet), we say goodbye.........(in the meantime) I'll be thinking of you

Only my tuppence (two cents) worth of course.

I’ve always thought it was about a relationship in which both parties were aware that their rendezvous would be brief and seldom due to other outside circumstances. It makes the song a lot more melancholy than one that said “see ya soon!”.

How does it mean a gun? (Other than ventilating people by putting holes in them?)

a ventilator is old slang for a gun i don't know why it means that

now i maybe wrong but i think the lyrics to the song have can be interpreted in many different way and this is on purpose

i mean for instances

"When you're trapped and circled with no second chances
Code of living is your gun in hand
Can't be browed by beating, can't be cowed by words
Messed by cheating, ain't gonna ever learn"

or

"Women's cussing, you can hear her scream
Feel like murder in the first degree"

the words in bold esspecially to me can be interpreted as someone feeling like committing murder in the first degree or one feeling as bad as that

also from streets of love

"i think i've crossed the rubicon"

i didn't understand this for years then i read a book on roman history and the part about julius caesar ordering his armed legions across the rubicon river the symbolic border of ancient rome he had made a decsion that he couldn't take back and had started a war

thus the origin of a phrase that i had never heard before to that point about making a decision that you can't take back

"Baby, got no flavor, there's fever in the funk house now"

"I'm all sixes and sevens and nines"

"Since you 86-ed me, pretty beat up"

"On Saturday night she bass-a-dee
She stepping high on Frederick's Street"
"Get next to me, drive me close
Don't mammaguay, I lose control"
"On Saturday night we don't go home
We bacchanal, there ain't no dawn"

Someone help me please!

What about politesse? A word that no dictionary knows. Does he mean politeness or what? Was it ever questioned or explained?

bacchanal: get drunk ('bacchanalia' in ancient Rome were festivities devoted to the god Bacchus)

"I'm all sixes and sevens and nines"

This refers to playing cards. Sixes and sevens and nines are insignificant cards of lowest value.

Er, I think it’s rather a reference to “dice.”

In craps, rolling sixes, sevens, and nines can be good or bad, depending on the situation. In 2010, Mick revealed he knew very little about gambling. A housekeeper in France (or was it LA?) explained it to him.

Thanks for correcting and highlighting me. I don't know much about gambling.

My aunts and uncles, who played a lot of whist, certainly used to say "all sixes and sevens" about a poor hand, and having no "money" in the hand meant you had no decent cards too.
