OT: 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualification (UEFA)
Posted by: Stoneage ()

For the 2022 FIFA World Cup scheduled to take place in Qatar in late November 2022. mMny teams involved and only a few games left. I will concentrate on the Nordic teams here. Feel free to involve your own team of course. Sweden botched their chances of winning their group and qualify for the WC 2022 by losing their last two games. They ended up on second place and will now qualify for the remaining 3 spots in the WC in Qatar. A slim chance by the way: 3 teams will make it, 9 will not. Norway only reached 0-0 against Latvia (who was out already) on home turf and will now face Holland in Holland. A tough task since they, most probably, need to win to secure either direct qualification or qualification. So does Holland by the way. Denmark is already qualified after 7 straight wins (some kind of record). Congratulations. Iceland is out, regrettably. Finland has a good chance of making it for the qualification rounds.

Canada plays Mexico in Edmonton, where it's snowing and temps below freezing! Expecting 50000 for the game! Complete opposite of when Canada plays in Mexico and it's scorching hot!

<Norway only reached 0-0 against Latvia (who was out already) on home turf and will now face Holland in Holland>

Luckily, the Netherlands let in two quick goals towards the end of their match against Montenegro. That was an early Christmas present for us.

It's in Norway's hands: A win will secure play off. A win that is bigger than Turkey's win (if they win, that is) will secure direct qualification for the World Cup.

BTW, I watched Georgia-Sweden. Couldn't believe my eyes. Sweden had so many chances to kill the match in the first half.

Sometimes the ball just won't go into the net. Same with Norway against Latvia. When that is said, both Georgia and Latvia have improved tremendously, especially tactically and defensively.

I see England delivered the obligatory thrashing of San Marino. No-one in England is remotely excited about this, obviously. Or, at least, they shouldn’t be. The problem is that a UEFA-affiliated national team such as San Marino deserves a chance, but have zero hope. They’re just there to boost Harry Kane’s goal-scoring tally.

They did score one of the fastest ever goals in World Cup history though - against England in Nov 1993.

Montenegro gave our Dutch team a difficult game 2-2.
Tonight against Norway, a good chance they kick us out for the WCQ.
At least our trainer, always in a good mood, has his stuff together.smoking smiley

Neither Norway nor Finland made it to the World Cup in Qatar 2022. Both lost their final games to The Netherlands and France. Congrats to The Netherlands and France.
Denmark is now the only Nordic country qualified for the World Cup. Sweden still has a chance of qualifying in the play-offs. Some good teams in that play off though.
Like reigning EC holders Italy and Portugal. Norway, Finland and Iceland out.

Scotland in the play offs with a guaranteed home draw. Once a good side, we’ve been abysmal for decades but Steve Clarke has finally knocked the team into shape. Currently on a run of 6 consecutive wins, beating and completely outplaying Euro 2021 Semifinalists Denmark 2-0 in Glasgow last night. Finally we have a glimmer of hope...

10 European Teams have qualified.

Another 12 European Teams are in the playoffs - 6 seeded teams at home and 6 unseeded teams away. Draw will be made on November 26th. Scotland and Wales are both seeded and cannot play each other so U.K. well represented.

The 6 winners of those one off matches then play each other and the 3 winners qualify for the World Cup. So of 12 play off teams, 3 go through.

All matches to be played in late March. Seriously complicated and this article explains it all in detail.

It would be so very Scotland to qualify for their first World Cup in 24 years in a country where alcohol is banned.....

That’s not a bad thing. Bale’s not getting any younger so it’s good that they can still be effective without him. Plenty of other good players in the squad and with the sheer pace of Dan James flying down the wing, you’re always in with a shout.thumbs up

If Italy don’t qualify then they should throw one of the lesser teams out and let Italy in it is not right to have a World Cup without Italy.

And prior to Kane’s recent four, that match was the last time an England player scored that many - Ian Wright, of course. It’s still just San Marino, though.

Haha. Actually it would be nice if Italy would make the tournament this time (they didn't qualify in 2018 either). But as is with sports one needs to deserve that by a good enough performance, no free passes. But it is not a piece of cake from Europe to qualify, since there is only 13 spots from Europe. This means that about always some traditionally big country fails to do that, since the traditionally lesser teams are getting better and the competetion just getting tougher and tougher.

Totally agree Doxa. No Team or Country in any sport should ever be handed a free pass just because of their history or reputation. It would make a complete mockery of sporting integrity. If you don't deliver on the field of play then your arse is out the window, regardless of who you are and vice versa - if a less fancied team performs well enough, then they get a place. No one should ever be 'entitled' to anything.

Sweden kicked out Italy in the 2018 WC qualification play off stage. I guess they haven't forgiven us still. The thing is that there is a good possibility we might meet them again.
Not in the first round (we're both seeded) but maybe in the second. Let's hope not though. We would rather meet someone else.

I remember growing up in the seventies that England never qualified for the World Cup (from 1970 to 1982). It was considered a strange thing at the time. But they have improved since then
and with the exception of 1994 never missed a World Cup. I might be mistaking - but they seem to have been seeded in very easy qualification groups lately. Is that right?

England failed to qualify for the 1974 & 1978 World Cups. Scotland were the UK's only representatives at both. Only 16 teams in the Finals in those days (now 48). We had a very good squad both times but went out at the group stage on goal difference both times sad smiley In 1974 we were the only unbeaten team at the tournament.

For me, growing up in Scotland, it was completely normal for England to NOT be at the World Cup so it was strange when they finally got there again at Spain 1982 grinning smiley

Qualification should be decided by which teams have the best looking women in the stands watching not by matches won.Under this criteria Italy would qualify every time.

Canada beat Mexico 2-1 on Tuesday night in Edmonton! Temps were well below freezing, which was a definite advantage for Canada. I'm actually wondering if many of the Mexican team has ever seen snow before? Over 50000 tickets were sold and around 46000 showed up.

CONCACAF group. Well done.

Canada wins!
