OT: What is the newest band you love and when did they start?

Going to see Atlanta’s very own Mastodon at The Ryman on the front row November 23. They’re probably the newest (2000) band that I love.

Who is yours?

Black Pumas (2017)

Arcade Fire (2001-)

Funeral (2004), their debut album, is (a) still their best album so far, (b) the greatest rock album released in the 21st century (for me) and (c) the rock’s last great album released up to this point (again, for me).

Saw them for the first time at Summer Sonic Osaka, 2005. Short festive set of 50 mins, but they blew me away, a complete, total knockout. Added another seven shows up to 2018, all great, but the first cut was the deepest (in a good sense).

Although their latest release, Everything Now (2017) is lacklustre, the show is still captivating.

Jade Bird, first record 2017
The Delines, first record 2014.

Good guitar music is harder to find these days, but not impossible.

When I was 19, few groups’ mattered more to me than The Strokes. They formed circa 2000, and released their debut EP a year later, in 2001. For a short period, they absolutely shaped my life. Around 2002, another group, The Libertines, had a similar, quite profound, effect on all I am. Both really mattered to me, for sure. Every Thursday morning I would buy the NME, hoping there’d be news, interviews, or stories about them. I really liked The Killers and The Arctic Monkey’s, too. I’d say my interest in contemporary music waned circa the mid-2000’s. I did, however, become rather obsessed with Beyoncé for a while. I have all her albums; outtakes, too.

I really like The War on Drugs. Not sure if I’m digging the new one they just put out though.

I’m a millennial, too. I’m not sure where you fit on that spectrum, yet I suspect you’re a little younger than I. Perhaps you missed out on all the great alternative music of the early 2000’s. My passion was always towards my father’s LP collection, yet every generation should have its own scene. I needed ‘my group’; something that stood for me as a young person. I found that in The Strokes and Libertines. I have so much nostalgia for that time and the wonderful social life I had: indie nightclubs, endless cigarettes, and girls, girls, girls, and more girls! Sigh... to be that age again!

i'm 29 my musical tastes where largely informed by my mother who is a baby boomer born in 57 because as a child i didn't have friends my age or at all really that weren't adults (mostly do to my autism) and the radio was always on and tuned to classic rock stations (kzok seattle) and in my early teens i became obsessed with the stones they spoke to me and so did the people who spoke to them at my age (muddy, chuck, johnson) they stood for me as a person much much more then the music of my generation and still do

music was also very important in my ability to concentrate at school because i struggled to not be distracted i found it much easier to concentrate with music so i would record my mom's vinyl to tapes and take that to school not sure how many 3rd graders learned to read by listening to the velvet underground, david bowie, or ac/dc but i did thank god i had understanding (cool) teachers

I saw mastodon a number of times. Their first 4 albums are great metal records.
Unfortunately after that it all went downhill.
Try pallbearer. Since 2012 or so. It's the new sabbath. Great stuff

Altin Gün (2016) - Anatolian funk band from the Netherlands
Men I Trust (2014) - Dream pop and Dance from Canada
Nu Genea (2015) - Disco and Dance music from Napoli
Khruangbin (2010) - Thai-Funk from the US

The newest one and one that I would recommend to all of you, including the R&B and Rock purists:

Sault (2019) - fantastic mix of classic Soul-sounds, with great basslines and a great fusion of vintage and modern production styles. The themes they cover lyrically are of course as important as ever.
Just listen to Free or Masterpiece or Why Why Why Why (my favorite)

Arlo Parks (and her band) I think 2019 but she's only 20 now. Also Arcade Fire as previous poster has mentioned.

You shouldn't "love" newer bands because you're setting yourself up for disappointment when they start to "branch out" I used to like the Black Keys, only for them to come out with El Camino. For me it was "Oh now you like them too, what a f*king surprise"

Attack and Release is my favorite of theirs.

Yes they were great with the blues but it seems they were trying to get popular with teens or something

I saw their first ever show I think! Nice to hear they are still around, gonna look them up now.

For me? Well, band would be

The Oil Barons, recently:

[youtu.be]

Not exactly a band but saw Doecci guesting with Isaiah Rashad and completely infatuated:

[youtu.be]

And this Tay Money video just blows me away every time:

[youtu.be]

I think she might have just had plastic surgery.
