Auction record for Stones poster

A rare concert poster promoting The Rolling Stones’ run at the Windsor R&B club in the early Sixties sold for £30,000 on October 28.

The red and black printed single sheet design for the Ricky Tick R&B club night at the Thames Hotel, Windsor, attracted huge interest before selling at Dawsons in Maidenhead. The price, many times the £800-1200 estimate, is thought to be a record for a Stones poster.

The band first played at the Ricky Tick on December 14th, 1962 (the first ever gig with Bill Wyman on bass) and appeared there again close to 40 times over the next two years. The poster was designed by Bob McGrath, the leader of the Hogsnort Rupert R&B band who produced a number of poster designs for the club in its glory years.

Forgive my failing eyes, but what is the design in the LLs of roLLing?

Is it a face? A brick wall?

It's just "THE" between the "L"s.

I was delighted to add this important piece to the Hot Stuff Archive. The good news is it won't be hidden away and will be enjoyed by many though the opening of my central London exhibition space (coming soon).

I am always looking for more great stuff, not only will it go to a great home but I don't get outbid on stuff I want. Over £15,000 in commission was lost in this transaction alone!

My book Hot Stuff has two other Ricky Tick posters in it:

Very nice piece of Rolling Stones history. Would the G behind ROLLIN suggest that this poster was made after Charlie had joined and they became THE ROLLING STONES? In other words, a 1963 item?

Yes, it's summer 63, based on when they first played The Thames Hotel in Windsor every Tuesday.

It's good to know that this poster has been bought by a fan and won't be locked up in a vault somewhere. Reminds me of Warhol's Love You Live artwork.

I also like Francis Bacon's Three Studies for a Portrait (Mick Jagger):
