Fiji Jim - New Edition - Lyric Transcription!

A Jagger/Richards composition

I’m gonna call-up Fiji Jim
Tell him to get on the plane
Tell him to bring his electric guitar
Tell him to get on the stage
Been a hell of week, hell of a month
Been the strangest year
It’s all gone by in the blink of a eye
There ain’t no time for tears

Instrumental Break – Insert Wood / Richards ‘guitar weave’ here

Yeah, one last chance, one last dance
I got ice in my veins
One last chance, one last dance
We’re gonna drive the crowd insane
We gonna call-up Fiji Jim
Come-up stealin’ the wine
Time to get on bass, and gonna bust the place
The rest go down in flames
All wrecked-up for cases of wine
Snort an ounce of C0caine
Got a keg of beer, bring it over here
A six pack more a’ champagne

Instrumental Break – Insert Wood / Richards ‘guitar weave’ here

Yeah, one last chance, one last gasp
We got skin in the game
One last chance, one last dance
Gonna drive the crowd insane
Yeah, the drums that snap, like a thunder clap
The bass drum mash on the floor
The guitar scream, and the feedback dream
Like you never heard before
Pray superstition, lots of ammunition
We’re out of cigarettes
There's no intermission, no air condition
For cloths are soaking wet

Instrumental bridge – Woody on slide guitar and MJ harmonica

We gonna call-up Fiji Jim
Tell him to get on a plane
Tell him to bring his wah-wah pedal
Drive the crowd insane
Well, he bust two ribs and he bruised his limbs
A took some pills for the pain
We got shaky legs, and his nose was bled
But man he sure could play
I could see you in the foyer grove
Trying so hard to impress
You took off your dress, and I’m way out of breath
Carry me off this stage …

Come on Fiji Jim
Come on Fiji Jim
Come on Fiji Jim
Come on Fiji Jim
Come on Fiji Jim
Come on Fiji Jim
Come on Fiji Jim
Come on Fiji Jim
Come on Fiji Jim
To fade

Last track, side one of “Some Girls”?

Maybe not, but the imagery.

Fantastic.

In the second stanza, I hear “call up Steve and Dwayne” instead of “Come up stealin’ the Wine”. Lol anyone else??

A few minor corrections:

Already drunk four cases of wine

Grab a keg of beer

Or else go down in flames

Play “Superstition”

I’m definitely hearing “Steve and Duane,” too. I think the bass player is named too. Hard to tell! After years of listening to that outtake, it never occurred to me that Fiji Jim was a musician.eye rolling smiley

Get a cat on bass gonna bust this place
Or else go down in flames.

I like the line with the skin in the game. You don't often get that sense of an immediate statement about the actual band

IMHO, this is THE best "new release" on TY Deluxe.

First heard this track in 1982 when I bought Accidents Will Happen (Claudine) 2LP on Eva Label. Really dug it, and I played it a lot thru the years. Was hoping it would've made it onto the Some Girls Deluxe, because it's much better than many of the vault trax thereon.

However much I liked that version, I REALLY love the released one even more. Incredible vox, amazing Keith & Ronnie groove, and Charlie's good tonight. That said, while Jagger typically re-does vox for most vault trax, except for one stanza, I think this could be his 1978 or 1979 vox. I'd be curious to learn what exact "2021" work was done on this one. EDIT - I went back and pulled a couple versions I had, and wrong, the vox are totally re-done, but he doesn't sing as "sharp" and "brite" on this re-do as he does on so many "21st century trax & performances...

Still, it's all over my jukebox, and Fiji Jim's brought his electric guitar and his wah-wah pedal!!

For me it's one of the best tracks on Tattoo You deluxe ... it's played beautifully and the slide guitar here is really cool!
But the text is beautiful too ... and takes us back to the golden years.

Has anyone ever tried to decipher the original Fiji Jim lyrics? I've only found a ridiculous attempt that works unter the presumption that the song was about "Fiji Gin"

I asked my pops what he thought a couple weeks back and that was his immediate response.

SRV in 1977? Was he known outside of the blues bars in Austin at this time?

There is no reference to Steve and Duane in the original bootleg lyrics. The released version was written/finished later.

The first time Mick Jagger heard about Stevie Ray Vaughan was in 1982

It sounds like modern Jagger singing. I think the "strangest year" line is even referring to the pandemic.

The original, Some Girls era lyrics aren't finished. Funny enough, he sings "the white girls go insane" on the bootleg, which is an obvious reference to Hendrix. He changed to "crowd goes insane" on the modern version.
