We've been treated to a large number of live releases in recent years. I now must have at least 12 official versions of JJF, BS, IORR etc. Has anyone trawled through all these to identify the best versions? Of course there is a subjective element to this; Some of us love the Love You Live version of IORR for example and others would prefer the more recent, Chuck Berry style versions. But if anyone has made a playlist of their favourite versions I'd be interested to see it.

Tumbling Dice, as it is my favourite all-timer, for me actually has its best versions ever during the ABB tour autumn 2006 and summer 2007-stretches.

It might have summat to do with the fact that it took up the 10th spot in the setlist position right before the intros and the 9th usually meant a soul number in 06, always I'll Go Crazy in 2007 and this just set up the song perfectly IMHO.

IORR, yeah Toronto 1975 is THE version!
Brown Sugar for me should always include Bobby on sax when talking best version, stadium tours 02-03 as the opener are the ultimate ones for me although the 1973 openers always are a blast as well and with Bobby included of course. I am charmed by the Amsterdam x-rated version in 2003 for instance or the official Twickenham, yuumy!

Start Me Up would be 89-90 together with 2007.

JJ Flash I really dig 1976 although I thought it got destroyed (as with a couple of other warhorses by Bill Preston in the US 75).

Sympathy I really enjoyed as the opener in 2017, the darkness and the TV Junior making the entrance with Keith's powerful B-chord. MAGIC.

Miss You haven't sounded this good as it does during the No Filter ever even though 1978 was great.

HTW, the 1978 versions just leaves 'em all behind as I think the 75-76 are a blast as well I just prefer when there's not another solo (or did they do that in '78? I gotta go back and check).

Satisfaction- as with a lot of others, as the opener in 97-98. Just pure sleazy crawling king snake style, more like the record than the Otis version which is rare.

Do you know... I love all of them.

Lots of folks talk about how bored they get with the "Warhorses" ...but I love how they're always subtly different on each tour, with new little licks and subtle new timing inflections . It fascinates me every time.

They are all about the same since 1989. The Stones hardly improvise on them. If you have heard one version of a warhorse you have heard them all. I know this is not a popular view but it's my view all the same.
Usually I skip the most obvious warhorses when I listen to recordings of concerts. They simply bore me.

To my ears, performances of the warhorses do vary. The Stones sometimes lock into a groove and sometimes they don't. Sometimes IORR catches fire, and BS swings, and other times they just don't

Sound quality is another issue of course. I listened to Voodoo Uncut on Spotify (for a few seconds!) and was amazed how bad it sounded.

Yes, Voodoo Uncut is a very bland mix, lacking much in the way of any real dynamics....and the guitars are mixed inexplicably low !

Shame, because the performances are pretty good on the whole... and the arrangements often interesting.

Hey, there weren't warhorses before '89 at least -

i.e. 75% of the show, or thereabouts the same predictable songs.

The greatest-hits type shows perhaps started about then, but certainly by '94 - since when much the same formula has applied.

I expect that Honky Tonk Women has been played at every show since '69.
Ditto, but very slightly less, JJF

And their hit from '71 which cannot be named must have been played at nearly every show since it's release until very recently.

This is a great response, thanks. Does anyone prefer certain warhorse performances in the more recent releases - Bremen, Buenos Aires, Atlantic City etc? I want my playlist to be great sound quality so I might want to use some of these shows. For example I seem to remember that Midnight Rambler was especially hot in the Copacabana beach show.

Ireally like JJFlash and Satisfaction from Flashpoint. The 1972 Uptie/ Satisfaction medley as seen in CS Blues is great

Judging by how well Satisfaction and JJF is being played I'm guessing if the unmentionable Warhorse does come back next year it's going to be fantastic.

Many of the warhorses didn't get that status until much later, though. Paint It, Black, for instance.

It has nothing to do with the studio versions. Most warhorses were made before 1972 and the best live versions of them were usually made between 1969 and 1972.
Maybe with a few exceptions. I think the same goes for the only post 72 warhorses - Miss You, SMU, IORR, YGMR and BTMM (best live versions closest to their relase date).

I have to say as I’ve said before. The Tumbling Dice version of the Wild Horses single from Stripped. Superb in every way.
Also Start Me Up from Tokyo 1990 comes to mind.
