OT: The Jam

Any love here for The Jam?

I was just a young boy when they were at their massive height, but lately I've been giving them a real listen. Great, spikey pop songs, energy of youth, and, what's struck me the most in Bruce Foxton's pulsing, melodic basslines and essential back up vox.

Who here likes 'em?

My dad grew up listening to The Jam and turned me onto them.

Yeah big fan - my tastes have moved on and I almost never listen to them, but Sound Affects is a total classic.

I'll occasionally check out Weller's latest track as I think his voice has improved with age

They certainly were a great band, and Paul Weller is still a great live act whoever he has in his band.

Never did see The Jam play live, but did see Paul Weller play at Hyde Park a few years back with The Who headlining and so many great acts performing that day. smileys with beer

Absolutely!

I have the Direction Reaction Creation 5-CD set. It contains all the studio albums, plus demos.

I have a real love for much of Weller’s music: The Style Council and some of his solo work, too.

I love the Jam as well. They provided the soundtrack to my college years, along with the Clash. "Snap!" is a wonderful greatest hits compilation but there is a lot of good stuff that did not make it, due to space considerations I assume. Weller's subsequent stuff is hit or miss for me.

I love the Jam & Wellers solo stuff. His last album Fat Pop is very enjoyable

Yes, I bought their first album (In the City) when it came out.

Loved the track Taking my Love.

Bricks and Mortar too.

Rickenbackers, baby. And feedback.

Saw them live the same year.

I too loved Bruce Foxton's bass playing and his style.

Only problem - they advocated Toryism ( Thatcher et al)
All very well being radical, but .......

But musically ..... a breath of fresh air

Are you sure about that? Weller hated the Tories, and aired his dipleasure when David Cameron said Eton Rifles was a personal favourite.

Great band had all there vinyl output singles,Lp's,Ep's just a little too young to have seen them in Concert.Paul Weller did make it to Prague for a Concert back in 1995.I have to say what a trouper as only about 150 were in Attendance. He played about 2 Hours great show but alas he has not returned.I did lose interest with his next project The Style Council.Interesting that Paul And Woody are friends I wonder how that started?

I don't think that's correct at all. They hated the tories, and Weller was one of the leaders of Red Wedge in the mid-80s

Loved them. They were the only band that mattered to me back when I was young. I am the same age as Paul Weller. I saw them every time they came to the States. Loudest band ever and I saw the Clash who were known to be loud. Weller's songs and lyrics are still astounding considering his age when they were written. Met him many times as he always spent time with fans. Love most of his solo work too. His latest Fat Pop is brilliant. So yeah. Long Live The Jam.

He also wrote The Butterfly Collector a vitriolic haunting diatribe aimed at Thatcher

He changed.

When I interviewed in '77 ( New Musical Express) he said he had had enough of Labour and that he would be voting Conservative in the next election.

Quite a radical thing to say at the time. Though possibly his dad that way inclined. His dad managed the band early on.

Early Jam were in love with Mods - Who/Small Faces. Not saying that they are/were conservatives.

But the song Bricks and Mortar - housing estates. Johnny Rotten was anti the 'big' socialist state - inner cities - youth abandoned - no hope, no future

part of the rebellion. Labour were in power - poor working class kids will seek salvation in something else.

John Lydon is a Trumpist btw '"He's the only hope we've got", he has said recently.

But Weller changed - matured, grew up.

As his music. Rather well.

And crawdaddy - I was at that Hyde Park gig. ( Inner circle - not hyper pricey at the time).

Great day!

A friend of mine bought Snap, the best-of dubbel album, it really knocked me off my feat. And still does.

The only problem is, like with the Faces, is that it gets even better, when you're drinking quite a few beers, while listening to it.

It's some kind of thirsty-making music drinking smiley

With the Stones music, it doesn't seem to matter much....

Weird, isn't it ?

I don't think I know of any music that doesn't get better with a few beers

Hmmmmm, now that's a tricky one.

Choral music - hymns, praise music? No beers required.

Just noticed that Weller guested on one track at Ronnie's Mr Luck gig.
' Shame, Shame, Shame'

( no it wasn't)
