Who cares? His role in the band is very limited. He is only one part of the horn section. Not like Ernie Watts, for instance, who had a freer role and could interplay with the band.
Very few would even notice if Tim Reis was replaced by a random sax player. He may be a star in the jazz world though. I don't know. In that case he is overqualified for the Stones (like Darryl).
In this day and age you could say that about the entire band except for Jagger.I was just curious how good he is considered as a jazz player.

As a minimum you should get his name spelled right - Tim Ries.

I published this in the printed IORR magazine no. 36 back in 1999 i.e 22 years ago:

Tim Ries on saxophone (IORR no. 36 - May 1999)

I don't think jazz musicians are rated like #1 and #2 and so on, because jazz is a lot more than just technical skills and rank.

Tim Ries does not just play saxophone. If you see him on stage you will see him on keyboards too. He is a highly skilled and talented multi-instrumental performer. When he perform his jazz shows in various cities across the world, during tours, he is joined by the leading local musicians in those cities, wherever it is. He has a great contact network, and even if I am not a jazz specialist or even big fan myself, I enjoy a lot listening to the leading jazz musicians Tim is bringing in. Sure he is a leading jazz musician himself, but for decades, he has been busy with the Stones.

Adequate.

He's by far the 'best' (most accomplished) musician in the group.

Short answer is: yes, extremely good. And not only, as the RS project that you are listening shows, he is a great arranger (and composer) too.

Hey guys, he's hired by The Rolling Stones! And indeed as a multi instrument musician. Off course he has to be good!
But seriously, I saw him in Melbourne in 2014 (when Hanging Rock was cancelled a second time around thumbs down) together with Chuck Leavell. They gave me a very fine evening! Tim did the saxophone beautifully.

Very good I would say. With the one and only Charlie Watts on drums:

Yes he is very very good. Very different from Bobby Keys but just as good. Tim should play every sax solo now when Bobby Keys isnt with us anymore.

Why are you ranking musicians? That’s not what playing music is about.

Why not? I just want to know his reputation as a jazz saxophonist.Don’t music critics always rate musicians in their reviews? Okay may I have your permission to ask you if it’s okay to rate BrianJones as a musician at the Rock n Roll Circus

Guess we'll have to get rid of every readers poll, and every top 10, top 100, and top 500 lists about musicians...
Top ten guitar players? Don't ask!

You can’t win your argument. You and everyone else is constantly evaluating a musicians talents and efforts from ranking albums to criticizing musicians like Brian for their performances . I wasn’t asking you to rank Tim Reis as a jazz player, I just am not familiar with how good of a jazz player he is because I don’t listen to much of that music. He also is not given that much of a spotlight to solo when he is with the Stones so I wasn’t sure whether he is really good jazz player. You should chill and stop being so negative

I do believe that talent and what you do with it as musician can make the difference. And then there are the listeners that have different tastes rooted in cultural or musical background, even blind fandom, or the contrary: snobbism. Very complex stuff actually. As long as a musician makes the listener feel good, the job is done, no matter what style or "level".
