Believe it or not, Charlie really liked “Gunface” from B2B.

Never read that before, but I am also a fan of that track!

sounds logical : it's built on groove and it's basically a dialog between a drummer and his guitarist. thumbs up

I know right?!

Actually, when B2B came out, Charlie gave an interview where he had a lot of positive words for the material. He liked “Gunface,” “Saint of Me,” “How Can I Stop?” and even “Anybody Seen My Baby?”

I like “Gunface” too. That and “Low Down” are fantastic grove tracks in the classic Stones drums/guitar riff type of way.

I love Bridges and Voodoo.I think they are very underrated albums. His drumming was always great no matter the strength of the song or the bands playing

That’s right! Charlie even went as far as to say he liked the re-recorded version of “Not Fade Away” on Stripped better than he liked the Stones’ original cover version on ENHM.

Steel Wheels is my favorite of the modern Stones albums, and one of my desert island choices.

That said, there’s no getting around it: VL and B2B have some of Charlie Watts’ finest work. Not only as a Rolling Stone, but as a professional musician.

Well, given how iconic that drum intro and samba beat has become, I’d be pretty proud of it if I was the drummer on that song, to say nothing of wanting to perform it every chance I got!

I seem to remember he saying that he never listened to the Stones while at home. It was Shirley who always put a Stones' record on the turntable.

Very interesting (and I agree with Charlie). Do you have a source?

He said in this interview [in french] that he was particularly proud of the drums on the Stripped version of "Not Fade Away". He adds: "but it's difficult to say, because I never listen to the Stones albums again". smiling smiley

Quelle est la partie de batterie dont vous êtes le plus fier ?
Peut-être celle de Not fade away, sur l'album live Stripped. Mais c'est difficile à dire car je n'écoute jamais les disques des Rolling Stones.

Thank you DandelionPowderman. I’d forgotten: he also liked that version as well. Keith too. The latter said the Stripped version is a great example of his vision of a more mature Stones.
