Charlie playing on non-Stones recordings
Posted by: Jimmy C ()
Date: August 25, 2021 18:40

Stumbled upon this last night. I've never heard this before, this is from a Peter Frampton album from 2006. Both Charlie and Bill playing on this track. Is there an all encompassing list of everything outside the Stones he's played on outside of his solo jazz records?

Don't remember seeing such a list but Nico's website would have the sessions, here's the Frampton one : [www.nzentgraf.de] under 060911A

He was the producer of the "People Band 1968" album.

Nico Zentgraf's The Complete Works mentions a recording of Eric Clapton's "Carnival To Rio" featuring all Stones members in 1975,
but the released album version doesn't feature any of the Stones.

He played on Keith's version of "The Harder They Come".

He played on some of the tracks on Tim Ries's albums "The Rolling Stones Project" and "Stones World".

Great list...but as a Ronnie Lane fan I have to point out that the Rough Mix album is a collaboration between Pete and Ronnie.

Not sure if anyone realizes or not (did a quick search and nothing popped in the last year), but Rocket 88's album was actually re-released in May! That is one hole I've had for quite sometime.....

Also re-released on the same label (Wounded Bird) was Bobby Keys' album.

Didn’t he do something with Jim Keltner

Re: Charlie playing on non-Stones recordings

It seems when Charlie is playing rock, he has that little idiosyncratic absence of a beat where you think it should be. It creates a unique effect that often defines the class Stones sound. When he plays jazz, it's more straight forward. He's harder to define as a jazz player. I was fascinated how different Bill sounded when he backed up Muddy Waters/Buddy Guy/Junior Wells at Montreux in '74. Great, but did not sound like he was playing with the Stones. Two great musicians, Wyman and Watts, who formed the greatest rhythm section in rock and roll.

Yes, the Jim Keltner project, which is actually my favorite album of his.

Not sure how long they've been up, but just noticed Spotify and Apple Music now appear to have all of Charlie's jazz albums up, all the way back to From One Charlie. And that Rocket 88 album is also on there.

There's currently only "Live in Paris" (released 2012), but not "The Magic of Boogie Woogie" (released 2010).
