I am in Cancun Mexico on my own, doing the 14 days needed to go on the US Tour 2021 in September, due to the US Covid-19 rules. As I get the news about Charlie passing today, I get so sad. The Rolling Stones are my other family. I spend 25% or more of my life on The Rolling Stones. I used to call myself Charlie when I became a Stones fan exactly 50 years ago this month, back in August 1971, because I used to be a drummer myself, and because Charlie was so cool. Now I realize the last show with Charlie was in Miami August 30, 2019. So sad. So sad.

Condolences.

Here's the Channel 4 tribute.
The scene at the end as Charlie departs is heart wrenching

The whole Rolling Stones website redirects to this:

[rollingstones.com]

I think that it a fitting tribute - right now, nothing else matters, the tour, the future, the album, the re-issues...

Let's just have this time to raise a glass to the Salt of the Band...

My favourite memories include:

- Coventry (2018) everyone singing Happy Birthday to Charlie
- Paris (2017) Charlie laughing as Mick takes drumstick and crashes his cymbals while playing Street Fighting Man
- London Rehearsals (seeing the band up close - the last time I have seen the Stones, and what a special time)

I read it here, I read lots of posts, I read it in the papers, I hear it in the news, saw reports on TV - but I still cannot believe it. Very strange feeling.

One question for you or anyone -- the Sun quoted an unnamed insider as saying that things took an unexpected turn (for the worse). How reliable is the Sun as a newspaper?

plexi

The Sun is a tabloid. And a not very reputable one at that. But, as they say, even a broken watch is right twice a day.

As far as things taking a turn for the worse, if you look at the press statements from back when Charlie's absence from the tour was announced, they were talking about a full recovery to be expected etc. and that "no one saw this [the illness] coming"

So in that regard I guess it's pretty obvious things took a turn for the worse. I don't want to speculate how much they knew about the gravity of the situation and whether they knowingly embellished it. This is not the time for that.

Ditto that.

I'm not sure whether it's appropriate or maybe self centred to cry on the passing of someone you didn't know...but for me the tears came on waking this morning.

I think we glimpsed enough of of Charlie to feel that he was a happy man...so we can be thankful for that as our thoughts turn to his loving family and friends.

I didn't shed a tear, but like with George Harrison's passing, I felt like I could cry. I haven't shed a tear since the unexpected and sudden death of my father; the person whose record collection introduced me to Charlie, in fact.

As a young boy the Rolling Stones were my first musical education and awareness, and it's a very solid one. Charlie's passing triggers a lot of hidden emotions, they are stronger than I could imagine. Some essential part of my life has gone forever.

I still can't believe it, it's a great pain. Thank you for contributing your drums to the soundtrack of my life. Rest in peace, Charlie.

I was aware that a day like this could come, any day, now I can't believe it has, also that anticipation does not ease the pain at all. charlie is a brother in soul and today I only feel the loss

Cried my eyes out after this one. Charlie seemed to have had a wonderful life although like us all, I'm sure he faced difficulties. But, he had fame, fortune, a wonderful marriage, a child and a grandchild. My tears are for his family, the other Stones and for us, who will never again know the sheer joy of attending a true Rolling Stones concert. RIP Charlie

My wife and I had drink to Charlie last night, played some video and both ended up shedding a tear. We realized that even though we’re going to see them again, it WILL NOT, be the same. There is still Mick, Keith and Ronnie, but there is no Rolling Stones.

"Take all the pain...It's yours anyway"
