Hello everyone! I’m curious about a few appearances in the “Waiting On A Friend” video - - perhaps one of you may be able to shed some light, please?

1) At about the 2:10 mark, the camera focusses in on a “punk-rocker-looking” dude sitting in a window while Mick and Keith stroll on past. Is this fellow anyone we are supposed to recognize, or is it just a random shot?

2) I understand that Peter Tosh is one of the fellows sitting on the steps earlier in the video. Is he the one that Keith shakes hands with, or is he one of the other fellows sitting behind Mick and Keith higher up on the stairs? And who are the other two there? Anyone noteworthy?

My apologies if this has been discussed previously. Thanks for enlightening me!

I always thought that was a joke. He's in the picture while Mick sings the line «I'm not waiting on a lady...». And he looks feminine, rather than punk, imo. So I just thought they had a good laugh about it.

In a way, the lyrics have a "double entendre" as well. They might have played on that a little.

I could be wrong, though.

None of them looks like Peter Tosh to me.
I may be wrong.

Yeah I didn't think any of them were Peter Tosh either. None of them look like him. PT was really tall as well - over 190cm.

Tosh appeared in the Rolling Stones’ video Waiting on a Friend.

Maybe he is in the video, but he is not sitting on those steps.

He is not on the steps and I was always puzzled by the comments that he was in the video. I do not think so, and I know for sure none of them dreads in that photo are peter tosh.

well anyone with eyes can see it is NOT Peter Tosh sitting next to Jagger. If anyone looks like Tosh it is the guy to Jagger and Richards' right (left side of photo) but from the still above one can see it is plainly not Peter Tosh.

I always thought that was him that Keith shakes hands with. Unless he's in the background when they all meet in the bar.

The official Tosh site says he is in the video but doesn't say he is on the porch. I have always been puzzled by this claim because he clearly is not one of the dreads on the porch. At least not to my eyes, and he was a very distinctive looking individual.

I saw that as well. In Wiki someone (a few years ago) someone stated it was Tosh and linked to official RS website where presumably it was referenced. That link doesn't work now though. Still does not look like Tosh to me though.

I have eyes. I guess I'm just stupid.

I examined this issue years ago. I compared photos of Tosh to the video. I think it's Peter Tosh next to Jagger on the steps.

None of the guys look like Tosh. Peter was winding up his European tour with a show in Oslo on July 3. The WOAF video was shot July 2. Unlikely he would have flown in for that.

One of my fave Stones songs. Just watched the promo video which I hadn't seen for a number of years. This is the video where, when I first saw it, I cracked up watching Mick and Keith acting like they was these really cool guys just casually slumming through the hood then meeting up with the rest of the gang in a bar to act out a rock'n'roll fantasy. It's still strikes me as the Stones as poseurs, parodying themselves, without quite realizing it. As to whether Peter Tosh is in the video, I'll leave that up to y'all.

I think its a case of people thinking someone with dreadlocks at the time had to be someone famous. And, hence, Peter Tosh who was associated with the Stones, though it is obvious NONE of those people are Peter Tosh. I also kind of think that the relationship between Tosh and the Stones had totally broken down by the time that vid was filmed, and it was never very strong to begin with as Tosh thought Jagger at least was gay and he has been on record as saying he did not want "batty germs" from shaking his hand. And of course there was the infamous showdown over Point of View which Tosh had pretty much commandeered as his own despite Keef's insistence he leave the premises.

So, if Peter Tosh is in the video, which I find haile unlikely, he for sure is not on the porch.

And yeah, the Mick and Keef slumming like they would never do in real life. Well, maybe Keef might in some limited capacity but for sure not Mr High Society.

Mick and Keith eventually walk down the street to a sleazy bar (now the not-so-sleazy V Bar) where they dance a little with Ron Wood and kind of stumble over to their instruments on a tiny stage. Actually Peter's European Tour ended at the Rainbow on 30th June. The Oslo show
was 3 June. So he could have flown over to NYC to be in the video on July 2nd.
