Nowhere in the announcement does it say emergency surgery
You're right, but it's in the title of this thread, and it's in the first sentence of the first paragraph of the first post which was taken from the first article posted in this thread.
Granted it's taken from the Daily Mail tabloid which can tend to overblow/exaggerate things ala the National Enquirer, but that's what it said.

Just wondering.........has anyone on this forum actually seen the contract that stipulates that the show must go on with or without Charlie?
- - -
And, if it is not in the contract to stop for Charlie, that means the Stones must have signed that way, which means that it's ok with them.........
- -
As I say, anyone seen these new contracts first hand to allow such bold comments as to Charlie's status and his motivation?
Haven't seen any new contracts obviously but I remember the 2014 court documents, at least excerpts of them, and already back then it was revealed their insurance did not cover Charlie's absence; he could be replaced. Trust me, I remember that very well. I wanna say it was discussed on here as well but maybe that thread has since been deleted.
I don't know what you mean by Charlie's "status and his motivation". I for one haven't talked about either.
And of course all four members have signed off on those contracts. In the end, it means insurance cost savings.

Let’s try to separate what we do know from what we don’t and is likely p.r.:
- Charlie had a “procedure.” It could have been oral surgery or an injection for back pain. It could have been, and we all hope not, extremely serious. We don’t know.
- Charlie isn’t going on the tour.
- The indication from the statements is that Charlie will skip the entire American tour, and approved (at some point) of Steve Jordan going out as his replacement.
- Charlie did not announce his retirement.
- Charlie hopes to do something with the group later this year, presumably after the tour.
- Charlie will presumably do something with the group next year for the anniversary, but we don’t know what Charlie will/can do.
There may be insiders who know more but can’t say. But I don’t think we can say much more about Charlie from what has been announced.

Still wonder why it is saying he will join the band on stage later in the year and why Rollingstone magazine says he wil miss 'part' of the upcoming tour under his picture.
The Sun article didn't say "on stage":
"He will be replaced by hot session drummer and friend of the band Steve Jordan — but still plans to rejoin bandmates Sir Mick Jagger, 78, Keith Richards, 77, and Ronnie Wood, 74, later this year."
Rolling Stone article said Charlie will not be a part of the upcoming tour:
"The Rolling Stones announced that drummer Charlie Watts will not be a part of their upcoming No Filter tour of U.S. stadiums after undergoing an unspecified medical procedure. Longtime Stones associate Steve Jordan, who is a member of Keith Richards’ side project X-Pensive Winos, will be taking his place."

This is kind of the Bad MOJO tour.
Yeah...the first postponement, then the Charlie announcement right after rescheduling, now the Jazz fest cancellation... dark clouds everywhere...things are seemingly getting bleaker by the day.

No need for drama. They'll do this tour and then it's probably over.

After reading most of the crap in this thread I must realize
that I´m in a wrong place after being here for 20 years.
Reading this thread made me realize that I am a purist,
a nerd, a fanatic, a Stones-Taliban.
I´m totally upset that M+K go on without Charlie, even if it
was for just one show.
I´m totally upset that they kneel down in front of insurances,
sponsors and contracts at this stage of their career. They make
their own rules. They are the Greatest Band in the World.
I´m totally upset that most of the people on IORR buy this excuse.
I´m totally upset that they don´t say “Fvck the contract. No Charlie,
no tour! What´s the fine?”
I´m totally upset that Charlie isn´t irreplaceable for most of
the people here.
I´m totally upset that the common sense on IORR is that
another drummer could replace him and add something to the
sound/setlist the day and the day after the news.
And this will go on. Treason.
I´m totally upset that even the webmaster of this site is
curious what the new one will do on Midnight Rambler.
I´m totally upset that some here are criticizing Charlies
drumming/style/tempo – in a band that is known for doing
so with any instrument, the singer included – for 60 @#$%&
years. It´s their trademark. Their DNA. Unbelievable bullshit.
I´m totally upset that I have to explain that to “soulbrothers
and soulsisters” on a Rolling Stones fansite.
Retired-dog said “Did you perform the same or a similar drama
when Bill left?”. Ass_hole. I wouldn´t tell you. Why posting
the answer on this site? Useless anyway. There´s just a handful
of people who feel the same as me. But that´s good to know.
I´ve seen the band 63 times (3 times with Bill), have achieved
anything I wanted. Some really important informations I got on
IORR. Thanks, bv. This was always a helpful community, but the
Charlie news “sorted the wheat from the chaff“. It will never
be the same, for the Stones and for this site. I couldn´t stand
the band touring without Charlie and reading enthusiastic posts
of how good Steve Jordan fit in.
Like what Keith once said to Bill German: "Forward, brother!"
bv, please delete my account. Thank you.
Rolling Stones forever.

The band doesn't owe us ANYTHING. If Charlie, at 80 years old, wants to sit out a few shows? Please, Charlie, take care of yourself. Steve Jordan is a great drummer. He has a shorthand with Keith as well. SJ reveres the band, the songs and the opportunity.
The Rolling Stones get to decide what to call the band. We, as concert goers get to decide whether or not we want to spend the $$ on tickets. We've been BEYOND lucky at the touring the band has done over the last 9 years. And, I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the ticket holders will even realize that Charlie isn't present. They think of Mick and Keith when they think Rolling Stones.
This tour isn't just about the band and we rabid fans.
The concert business has been decimated.
These shows will be a HUGE economic boost to the cities they play in. The crew that works for the band sure can use the income.
Charlie gave his blessing for SJ to sit in for him.
I've been listening to SLC from 2005. The tempo is incredible. Yes, the tempo of some of the songs has slowed down, since 2016. Keith flubs intros and forgets riffs. Charlie may have been playing through the pain.
SJ may give the band a little oomph tempo wise, especially for Keith. This is NOT a criticism of Charlie's playing. If he's injured, he may have had to slow down a bit.
I can see one or two shows with SJ on drums.
Hopefully, Charlie will be back in 2022.

Re. The second bit, to be fair, you did suggest the comments attributed to him by Rolling Stone were not his words at all but the PR dept. (status & motivation) and that, by default, he was just an inert bystander whilst his drum kit was taken over. I doubt that.

At this point, with the way covid numbers are rising and one show already cancelled, there is a chance that Steve Jordan won't even play any shows with the Stones!

The official statement said Mr. Watts “has had a procedure which was completely successful.” Rolling Stone magazine, which has some journalistic standards, described it as “an unspecified medical procedure.” The Daily Mail and the Sun are sometimes prone to exaggeration. We don’t know whether or not it was an emergency or even surgery. There’s not much point in speculating. Whatever it was, we all hope Charlie makes a full recovery.

Sorry, I never meant to say Charlie was a bystander or that he didn't have a say in things. I never addressed his "status" or his "motivation". What I meant was the PR people for the band will always embellish the statements.
In this instance, yes, it's obviously true they don't want people to disappointed because of a cancellation or a postponement. But I just pointed the statement doesn't mention the part about their contractual obligation to tour without Charlie if he's unavailable. This is why I said they "could not cancel".
I also wrote that Charlie alone probably didn't just "call Steve Jordan" and choose him. I'd expect that kind of decision to be a band decision/at least have Mick's and Keith's blessings.
Chances are they have their bases covered in case something like this happens and Steve Jordan was a contingency plan all along.
Rolling Stone didn't interview Charlie, they quoted the statements released by the band. Same with The Sun and Daily Mail. The tabloids just broke the story first, before the band did.

I’m not going to tell anyone how to be a fan but for me, I don’t want my last shows to be with Steve Jordan on drums.
Charlie Watts is The Rolling Stones. It’s been a great ride. Seen 60 shows. Get well soon.
