Thx TOO TOUGH for the post, saved me typing something similar and you said it well!

I had let them go years ago when Bill left. I enjoyed playing them on the stereo still, and they never lost their meaning for me, but I never went back to see them again until 2015 when I took a friend

Then I rediscovered them and have enjoyed those shows quite a bit but it was never lost on me that it didn't seem the Stones without Bill (and I love Daryl). Now with Charlie out that leaves less than half the original members. Not unexpected, they've had a run far surpassing what anyone imagined, but other than Jazzfest (for reasons I mentioned elsewhere) I'm out.

For those who go, stream it! I'll still be curious

Why do people assume the Stones were contractually obligated to continue this tour without Charlie? Do you really think they would have a contract obliging them to play even if one of their principle members was not able to join for whatever reason? They are doing this tour because they choose to.

Because there was a 2014 contract that leaked, saying exactly that.

But that's the point about choice, isn't it? They weren't forced to sign a contract at gunpoint (I assume!). It makes a bit of a mockery of all the good ol' Keith yarns about it being over when one of the original three is no longer part of the line-up.

If indeed if this is true, then it was undoubtedly a group decision. Certainly a large cost savings compared with insuring the “tour readiness” of four (upper 70’s) band members as compared with two. As a group decision, Charlie, and possibly his legal advisor, would have been one of the four decision makers. Interesting, if the band is only insuring two band members, then the band is aware the importance on which the average ticket buyer would place on each member.

Exactly, they could have insured the 4 of them but then their takeaway wouldn't have been the same, including Charlie's and Ron's. As it stands Charlie's probably keeping his share and just paying Jordan's salary out of his pocket.

I don't remember seeing that 2014 contract that leaked but I'm almost surprised that Keith was actually insured since they'd (supposedly) had to take Taylor on board in 2012/2013 in case Keith couldn't keep up. Well I suppose they would have had to keep him onstage "acting" with Taylor playing the actual guitar parts.

I hadn't heard of the Garth Brooks situation but it is indeed looking bleak [www.komoot.fr] - maybe the Stones will have dropped Charlie for nothing...

We've always known deep down Mick and Keith will tour and replace Charlie or Ronnie, I think people are naive when they think it's terrible if they continue without Charlie or Ronnie, I don't follow that reaction, so many bands replaced members, why should Mick and Keith be any different.
Remember touring is life blood to the Stones, it keeps them alive, they need it, always have.
Charlie is upbeat about it, so why can't fans be the same, we get a revitalised Keith with his old mate Steve Jordan, I think the Stones will sound better if anything, Charlie is 80 , that's a little too old to blast out Rock, I'm sorry to hear about Charlie and hope he recovers in time for the 60th Anniversary Tour next year, but the Stones don't have time on their side and I'm happy to see they still have heart and ambition so late in the game, good luck to them and the show really must go on.

I'm honestly quite gobsmacked by the willingness of so many to take this in stride and just say "well, Steve Jordan will do a fine job". (And I say this even though I have tons of respect for Steve Jordan - he is brilliant).

I have to ask - would you be so willing to just roll with the punches if it were Mick or Keith that was MIA?

Drew

I'd see any of the tree without the other two, but maybe not as the Stones.

I think you hit the nail on the head. This is not the Stones. Call it by something other than the Stones and I'm fine with it, and would probably buy tickets. But, without Charlie, calling it the Rolling Stones is ridiculous.

Drew

At some point it became a franchise more than a band.

Don't get me wrong. I tink it's OK to do the tour without Charlie as long he's comming back and is still in the band. I love Charlie and as long it's OK with him it's OK with me. After all they are old now, and the alternative is no Stones, it's cool that they find new ways to keep the train going. Charlie is comming back and temporary it's a new version of the band. Take it or leave it but time waits for no one.

all this talk about no Charlie I believe will for nothing. After reading about the troubles Garth Brooks is having with his stadium tour and Covid I think this Stones tour gets cancelled. Too much risk with delta variant floating around.

What trouble is Garth having? His shows sell out in an hour. He is making this call on his own.

It's gonna be a great USA tour for sure. thumbs up

Not trouble selling. Trouble packing 75,000 people together in a COVID hot spot. That's a PR nightmare. Especially when cases continue to climb in areas such as Missouri.

Don’t know why, but for me, the Stones with Steve Jordan are somewhat easier to be accepted than Led Zeppelin with Jason Bonham, at least.

I think, Steve replaces Charlie for once is just OK. IMHO.

And Steve's drumming doesn't seem to be that far off.

One of the main characteristics of Charlie>'s drumming is his raised right hand, missing the 4th hit on the hi-hat while his left hand hits the snare.

But Steve seems to have copied that:

I always thought that we don´t have to explain the importance
of Charlie as a drummer and for Stones´ sound on a Stones site.
Some are getting over these bad news very fast.

People who don´t have a problem with replacing Charlie
wouldn´t have a problem replacing Ronnie with...Waddy Wachtel?
Or Jimmy Rip?

This is not Dylan´s never ending tour with Matt Chamberlain
replacing George Recile on drums.

I think that we see the very last Stones chapter now. There´s
only a few pages left.

Absolutely Mick and Keith would replace Ronnie with either Taylor or Waddy, why wouldn't they, they still obviously love playing to live audiences, why deny them and the fans the pleasure, the only two members who can't be replaced are Mick and Keith, come on everyone knows this, Mick and Keith are being ruthless is BS.
Rock till they drop, that's the Stones, until the last man's standing, sentimentality doesn't come into their psyche, especially Mick.
You shouldn't need this spelt out to you.

The band with two hired musicians might sound like the Stones, but they aren't the Stones.
For me, unless Charlie will really recover and again join the others, the book is closed once and forever.
Sorry.

I´m nearly thinking the same. It´s my "visiting a Stones concert-book".
As I said before: I wouldn´t go in ´21 (even if I had tickets) and
wouldn´t go in ´22 - if Charlie isn´t playing the drums.

The reason to tour without him is contractual bla bla? Fvck the contracts.
Pay the promoter! 100 million? No problem. Get out of that thing,
get the @#$%& album ready, let Ronnie and Charlie recover and in 2022
bow out gracefully with 10 phenomenal shows.
But instead the first tour news
is playing the same tent in a stadium shit for a billionaires family. Disgusting.
(I didn´t even like these events when Charlie used to be the drummer).

Keith said in the 80s: "To me CW IS the Rolling Stones". How dare you
to sign such a piece of paper then? Keith, no problem. I can´t wait for
the first interviews: "How was it with the new drummer?" "I know Steve for
so long blah good timing blah Whinos blah until Charlie comes back blah
har har".

But the most upsetting thing is, that 80% of the posts here were/are like:
"Get well, Charlie - but Steve Jordan might add some new bla bla, that
might be interesting". Not posted 2 weeks after the news - the same day and
the day after! Shameful. It really fells like treason to that honorable and
humble man who´s on all the records we have and played the drums at every
gig we have been to. Remember?. Even thinking about what it could sound
like without him is really disrespectful. This is not a normal IORR
discussion about "MT or RW" or "the drumsound on Undercover" or "the impact
of Nicky Hopkins" - it´s about "replacing Charlie Watts", an essential
part of the sound of the greatest band in the world. How could one even
think that it is somehow possible to replace him? And to read this on IORR
from some so called die-hards or purists is really a shame. Only about
10 people here seem to think the same way as me: No Charlie, no Stones.

All those who can replace Charlie could EASILY replace Ronnie, too.
I hope he will be fine and reach the 100, but what if he gets sick again?
No problem. Why hesitating to replace him?

Forever Rolling Stones...I want it to be like that...but I have to grow up.
It can´t go on forever and now is the time to realize that fact. Those
who don´t care if someone else is drumming want it to go on forever until
only Mick is left performing. I´m sorry for them.

Something isn´t the same anymore if Charlie is not there. I couldn´t stand
seeing the Stones without him. If he´s back next year...fine, I will be there.

Coincidence: The news came on August 5th, 2021. My last show was on August 5th,
2019 at Metlife Stadium. My last ever photo taken there:
Mick, Ronnie and Keith are waiting for Charlie. So sad to see now.

A bow without him? I don´t want to witness that. Never ever.

Did you perform the same or a similar drama when Bill left? Imo as essential to the Stones sound as Charlie.

I certainly hate the fact Charlie won't be playing on this tour but I'm still going just the same. This hopefully is just an unfortunate and temporary bump in the road and Charlie recuperates quickly and completely from his surgery and comes back as soon as possible. I can relate to those who don't want to see the Rolling Stones without Charlie and understand if they don't plan on seeing this time around but I honestly believe the majority of fans will still want to see them on this very probable last tour of the United States. I also think that there will be some posters here who say they aren't going change their minds the closer it gets to the show.

Contract speculation:
- They've already spent advance money.
- A lot of people depend on them for income. They're running a business.
- I'm going to guess that the promoters/insurance people would settle for a Keith/Ronnie band if Keith couldn't go, but Keith has himself written in to the contracts as a must-have clause.

I'm curious/nervous about how it will go.

I know, to say this is a heresy among the fans — I didn’t bother that much when Bill left. I remember the times he more often than not dropped a hint, “I’m going to quit the Stones anytime possible,” that sort of whining, an ultimatum that didn’t seem to be put into effect for the time being, which irritated me. I thought to myself, fire him and bring in someone who plays decent bass. Eventually he left the group, but I still don’t miss him as much as many people here do. Darryl is okay for me.

Never ever.

I appreciate this.

Feel the same way. I found it...I have to say it, a bit disgusting you had people getting excited on the DAY THEY ANNOUNCED IT, that Jordan might be interesting and change it up a bit. Maybe they'll even change the setlist?!

Sure they could go on without him, but why would they...as the Rolling Stones? The money that brand brings I guess.

The thing that I also thought was brutal, was that "Charlie named his replacement! He wants the show to go on! Charlie good with it, so should we!".

Charlie is a gentleman and probably wouldn't think of impinging on everyone else.

It's too bad if they go out this way.

While I am extremely disappointed that Charlie won’t be on this tour, and while I do believe him to be essential to the Stones, I will still go to see Mick and Keith and Ronnie play. I will miss Charlie. I will be thinking of him during the entire concert. I miss Bobby every time they play Brown Sugar. Karl does a fine job, but Bobby is irreplaceable. Does that mean they should never play Brown Sugar or CYHMK again? No Charlie, no Stones? So YCAGWYW, IORR and Shine a Light aren’t Rolling Stones songs because Charlie didn’t play drums on those recordings?

I will go to these concerts on this tour because I love the Stones so much and this is very likely my last chance to see them because I can’t go to Europe next year. I hope Jordan will be adequate, that’s all I expect. I will miss Charlie desperately. But the most important thing is that Charlie is still alive and well. Let’s focus on that wonderful fact.

Thanks for the clip, waterrats, never seen this one before.

And here's an example of Steve doing that:
