"Longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis deputized for the bassist for last week’s shows, complete with a flowing beard grown during COVID lockdown".

What a coincidence .... winking smiley

(Looks like ZZ Top knew more about Dusty's true state of health than they wanna admit now)

ZZ Top Will Carry On After Dusty Hill’s Death, Billy Gibbons Says

By Chris Willman
July 29, 2021

AP

Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top has affirmed that the band will soldier on after the death this week of founding bassist Dusty Hill, asserting that it was his wish to “let the show go on.”

Gibbons texted the statement to SiriusXM “Trunk Nation” host Eddie Trunk, who passed the sentiments along via Twitter.

Gibbons said, per Trunk: “As Dusty said upon his departure, ‘Let the show go on!’ And… with respect, we’ll do well to get beyond this and honor his wishes.”

Added the guitarist in his text to the satellite radio host, “Dusty emphatically grabbed my arm and said, ‘Give Elwood the bottom end and take it to the Top.’ He meant it, amigo. He really did.”

A spokesperson confirmed the band’s plan to carry on to Variety.

RIP Dusty.

Glad the tour is going ahead, but damn glad I also caught the original trio a few years back. Cheap trick are the support act so I’m looking forward the gig...

Let's face it, ZZ Top were............and hopefully still are, a band that musicians like our Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck, John Fogerty, just off the top of my head and probably many others ................. . that welcome the trio to play at any gig, as guests or support band.
Dusty has just passed away, but the music he was so good at will still live on. thumbs up

Lifeless, robotic, played by the numbers... Gibbons seems bored to death.
"The thrill is gone" evidently.

Yes, the proshot Rockpalast gig is stunning, especially that rendition of Jesus left Chicago, never saw a better one. Don't know if Billy is bored to death about playing Gimme all your loving, but he's been playing it pretty much like that for decades, sometimes the solo's better than other times and he did it pretty good on the July 16 show.

Does anyone know if ZZ Top ever opened for the Stones?

They are a great band, but their shows have been very predictable for decades.

Very sad news.

It was worth seeing (or hearing...) ZZ Top live for the sound of Dusty's bass alone.

They also supported the Stones in '81 and AFAIK on one of the later tours.

I mean its hardly really news, at least to the point where I understand why THATS the headline. They continued on like literally the next day after he died and said as much. This isn't "continuing the tour" then seeing where it goes. This is "he's dead, not even cold, we are continuing." Which is their right and Dusty's wish. But its a full year later, I wouldn't in the headline say anything other than "ZZ Top Continues To Make Music".

I wonder why now though they’re making more music. Billy’s been releasing solo albums pretty regularly now instead of new ZZ stuff.

Probably more money in a new ZZ Top album than a new Billy Gibbons one.

Not to be morbid, but did they ever release a cause of death? I know he had hip and shoulder problems. I'm wondering if it was the same cause as Tom Petty and Prince.
