Question Re: LIFE
Posted by: ryanpow ()
Date: July 12, 2021 22:25

I remember reading in Life that there was song Keith learned to play on piano that he learned about from Ian Stewart. He said something like " Once When I heard it, I had to learn that song". I thumbed through Life in all of the pages with Ian Stewart and I can't find anything about it. Does anyone remember this? Am I not remembering it correctly?

Oh my, my mistake, I thought this was going to be about the meaning thereof.

Keith in 2004 about his piano playing: "I learned more than anybody from Ian Stewart."

Even though I didn't get an answer to the original question, I feel that I have gained some valuable insights from this thread.

I don’t think it was any particular song, but rather the style and technique of boogie-woogie.

I guess Keith has at least a couple of stories of where he learned piano.

I heard him say in some video, regarding his freind Gram Parsons, "He taught me country and he taught me piano".

This, like some of Keith's songs on albums, will come back around. I've been thinking about reading LIFE again. If I come across what you mentioned, I'll post about it.

Thanks! I think I might re-read it as well. It's been a while and it's a good read.

One thing about "Life". I was looking forward to reading about Tattoo You and the 1981/82 tour. And there was absolutely nothing about it in the book. The book is
very much concentrated around drugs, internal affairs in the band and his private life (women). It's actually very little about the tours and the records.

One thing really bothered me in Life was the no mention at all of Bill German… the guy wrote a whole book saying nice things about Keith….

It is also a lot about knives and guns. And fights.

Yes, threatening and throwing knives at various people plus lots of
nauseating drug use. If you can get past all that there are many interesting
stories as well. I found Keith’s telling of the very early days of
the band particularly interesting. Certainly worth a second read.

Agree, moon. The first part about his childhood was the best part.

There are soooooooooooooooo many! I've been drinking and trying different ones for months now, and as I explore different liquor stores, I find even more brands! It's like wine - I feel like I could never try them all!

First read I loved it, like the teenage fan I was.
Second read I was horrified, like the adult I am now.
Third read I was grateful that he revealed quite a bit about himself, the good and the bad, and showed himself to be a genuine artist and a good man with an interesting point of view.

Yes as an adult I was horrified.

They did drugs??? What??? What about the children for God's sake! -concerned mothers of the world

Seriously?

I just thought most of that talk demonstrated how he realized at some point that he had wasted large blocks of his life just being high. It was more tragic that horrifying.

Yes , but if Keith devoted a chapter to everyone that said nice things about him then it would turn into an almanac . Plus Bill German is a really good guy who I did get a chance to meet . This was just a moment in the history of the Stones from around 84-85 ish ? thru to 89 . Sometimes when you get to close to the sun you get burned .

I guess Keith mentions his family, buddies, and girlfriends. His inner circle. I don't think Bill German belonged there.

Keith sounds like a relatable guy to me..out here in the sticks we got critters and invasive, destructive rodents ta deal with all the time...
"Ya my best friend, he shoots water rats
And feeds them to his geese"
Been there...done that..about every day, it's never ending, except I choose ta feed em to the buzzards...
