The lower left picture on YouTube shows the Marquee Club in 90 Wardour Street (used from 1964) - not the one in 165 Oxford Street in which the Stones played their first gig in 1962.

What became of Earl Phillips after he left the group? Anyone know?

And was HE the mystery drummer on 12th July.

Actually I'm pretty sure that he never existed. The band had no regular drummer so Brian would have invented a plausible name for the letter.

Gets us no nearer to determining without question who it was on 12th July 1962.

Hmmm... maybe Brian invented an existing one smiling smiley
Maybe just used the name.. coincidently one of Charle's apparent idols (?)

Charlie Watts: A Legendary Drummer and His Jazzier Roots

Like the sky-blue pearl set of Ludwig drums he first used in The Rolling Stones, Watts approaches life like it’s an endless experiment in style and grace. For him, each recording session was about meticulous attention to detail, much the same as his love of everything from traditional English fashion to the fascination for Jimmy Reed’s drummer Earl Phillips and his ability to play the absolute essence of what Reed’s songs called for.

Leader Jones claims everyone had it all wrong, it was the "Rollin' Stones", as of almost exactly 60 years ago. No "The" in the name, nor a "g" after "Rollin" but instead an apostrophe. He seemed to be pretty adamant about that too from the way the letter is worded.

Would "Mike Avery" be the same guy as Mick Avery who was in the Kinks at least for a while? Not even sure of the spelling of his name, but I think he played drums.

Its only rock and roll: I hope they don't think we're a rock 'n' roll outfit.

Yes, same Mick Avory. He rehearsed a couple of times with the Stones; that’s all.

Funny. Nobody mentions Tony Chapman ...
The guy wasn't always reliable in terms of keeping appointments. Mick Avory stated many times, that he was asked over the phone to help out on July 12 1962, but soon after that phonecall he received another phonecall with something like "Thanks anyway, but in the meantime we have found another drummer", which could indicate that Tony Chapman had turned up "just in time". Several interviews (James Karnbach f.i.) with both Mick Avory and Tony Chapman made it very much justitied that Tony was the drummer on July 12 1962.
Somewhere I read (but, sorry, can't remember where) that Long John Baldry's drummer stood in, but there has never been any confirmation on that, as far as I know.
Keith (or his ghostwriter) mentions is his great book "Life", that it was Mick Avory, but well ... Avory says I was never there on that day.

You mean those songs? They are 1963 recordings (at least most of them) and at that time it already was "The Rolling Stones". The whole thing about MJ & The Rolling Stones basically means nothing. In the late 50s and early 60s it was very common to name the singer separately. So the guy who called Mick in 1962 (knowing he was the singer) simply assumed it was MJ & The Rolling Stones. And ... over the phone the distinction between "Rollin'" and "Rolling" is quite impossible to hear. No big deal, I'd say.

Yep, as done by Brian Jones in his letter - the "Rollin' Stones with Mick Jagger".

Yeah, I always thought it was Tony. I don't remember hearing anything about Earl Phillips until now, though yes...I'd heard of Avory's (brief) engagement with the band. Interesting.

Yep, as done by Brian Jones in his letter - the "Rollin' Stones with Mick Jagger".

Of course BJ was the leader. I just checked the birthdates and BJ is 18 months older than Jagger. Which means something back then when you are 21-22 yo and trying to get a gig

Many years later Keith gloriously punched out this Marquee owner and clown.

The Rolling Stones are on their 6th POPE.

Hallelujah.

Absolutely great achievement! It was this evening then, when they hit the stage first time ever. Let's just try to imagine that with our eyes closed cool smiley

If anyone would have a tape of the songs they played that evening (following Ian Stewart's notebook) that person could become an instant millionair (if Mick or Keith, or maybe Bill would have that tape, off course they wouldn't sell it cool smiley)

I wonder how much his estate still generates each year? And who gets it? Is his sister still alive? If not you wonder if some quiet relative gets the occasional check.

Yes, but for historical correctness, at the time the gig took place, Mick and Keith were only 18 y/o while Brian was 20.

I would like to say thank God for this amazing group of talented wonder kids through the long rocking historic Epoch that they have forever carved in so many hearts.
Slagging it out on a million hard road tours sublime.

I feels like Forest Thumpp.
The rock version of Forest Gump.
I was Born July 12. I'm 70 today.
Rockman has same birthday but I'm probably older.
Rockman is w Keith doppelganger tho,
He's ageless. Guys like Keith and Rockman scare the Shiite out of DEATH.
Keith shoots up and drives a skidoo onto a Palm tree using his Head as a bumper screaming FURCK YOU SATAN HAVE AT IT BITCH and that's just the way it fkn is.
It's not my fault. Don't report me.
It might not be snowing in Norway for Two day's in a row for the First Time since 2005. A bigger Bang. No comment.
Rough justice was good.

Okay.
I was like 11. I'd hear them at 12.
I'd see them at 21 and that Screwed me up for the rest of my life.

Happy birthday.
Bill
Charlie. He was in the way.
Brian
Keith
Michael

Also WTH, Mick Taylor, who on the strength of only Live with Me. Has he done nothing else again Ever,
Would be an Eternal King of Highest Boogaloo. Amen.

Ron! Ian! Mac? All them Faces?
Cool beans, son.
Lisa. Dee licious
Darryl. He was hot

Nicky, Stu Especially Stu.

I was 11. About 14 months later the girls in 7th grade started screaming on the bus
The Beatles.
Wow.
What do you think asked Barbara Schiller,
An 8th grader Older woman with well, breasts. And I said
Barbara, this is good. Don't get me wrong.
One of them can sing. One of them can sorta play the violin thing...but I am feeling that a more bluesy keep kinda hard Rockin Dirty thumping stuff is blowing in the wind.

Barbara said, this is why nobody else on the bus talks to you and why you can't come over again.
Stupid girl
