“Our Paul” as a whole generation of British people, mainly old women, curiously, called him, is one the greatest songwriters ever, and a singer gifted with an Angel’s voice, and the star of the greatest band of all time, Wings — no, I’m kidding! The Beatles, of course! But he only gets on our list for Wings, which had some superlative rock songs, and one of the great rock albums, Band on the Run. The Beatles liked to think of themselves as a rock band, and probably were when they were playing covers in Hamburg, but really, as the immortal group we know, they were a pop group. The best ever, without a doubt. And Paul, unlike John Lennon, was awkward, and in fact highly unsuccessful as a rocker. But on Band on the Run he propels chest cleaving songs like “Let Me Roll It” and “Jet,” and the title song, which is almost exactly like a good Beatles song, only rockier. I also loved “Picasso’s Last Words (Drink to Me).” Venus and Mars was great too. After that came… “Mary Had a Little Lamb”? Did it come before? Whatever. BGJ

I'm right there with you on that. Not a fan of his at all, but Elvis was pretty much the template for all rock stars.

But we're talking about a "Greatest Rock Stars" list that has Gwen Stefani and Morrissey on it, and not James Brown.

But we're talking about a "Greatest Rock Stars" list that has Gwen Stefani and Morrissey on it, and not James Brown.

As the vocalist and lyricist of The Smiths, Morrissey is of the most influential and important performers of the past 30+ years. I’d far rather listen to him, and most relevantly, The Smiths, than James Brown. I’d wager he’s had more influence on contemporary acts than James Brown, also. Brown and his Famous Flames shaped Michael Jackson, though; and Jagger did like his dancing. It’s all subjective, isn’t it?

I wish I had a screenshot of this, but I don't: Michael Nesmith posted on Facebook about five years ago saying this was a false fact he told a reporter back in the day just to see if it would be reported or if they would fact-check it. Now it's passed into legend and accepted as a true statement.

Exactly. I've heard of Morrisey but have no clue what he looks like or any of his songs. I'm sure there's some American musicians on here that Brits/Europeans don't know much about either!
