Slipping one past the censors - Stoneswise and otherwise
Posted by: Elmo Lewis ()

I'm speaking of over the airwaves......

Stoneswise - The end of SMU, obviously. "Dead man...."

Also, I have (occasionally) heard "When The Whip Comes Down" on the radio, The "gay in New York, fag in LA" line certainly wouldn't fly in these politically correct times.

Otherwise - Debbie Harry's "finger F&%king" line in "Rapture" slipped by. It's there, listen closely about !:36.

There was always some question about Rick Derringer's "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo". The liner notes say "c'mon little closer gonna do it to you". Many thought "closer" was really a description of the female anatomy. Around 2:34.

What ya got?

I don’t know that I’ve ever heard the title track to Some Girls on the radio, but that would be a hard one for the censors to miss.

The Jefferson Airplane slipped the “up against the wall, mothereffers” past the censors in 1969 when they released “We Can Be Together on their “Volunteers” LP.

I’ve heard the uncensored versions of The Who’s “Who Are You” and Steve Miller’s version of Paul Pena’s “Jet Airliner” many times on the radio.

Lou Reed: Walk on the wild side
'But she never lost her head
Even when she was giving head'

no censor seemed to notice what it was about…

The Kinks - Victoria

Canada to India
Australia to Cornwall
Singapore to Hong Kong
From the west to the east
From the rich to the poor
Victoria loved them all

The last line sounds like Ray is singing 'Victoria fvcked them all'

That's a good example, actually.

Who are you is probably the best example. I never hear that edited on the radio. Of course with satellite radio nothing is bleeped at all and one can hear Lil Wayne and all that ilk in all their cursing glory if one so chooses.

That is really something about Blondie and Debbie Harry ( Big fan and always wanted to see Blondie way back in there prime ) I have heard this tune more times than I care to admit and even to this day as it's on my playlist and never picked up on that lyric and if I had to venture a guess it's her style of singing that she got away with and slipped that lyric past the sensors . Which then leads to the question of am I listening with my ears or something else ? Guilty and loving every minute of it

Yes, "Who Are You" really got away with one.

"Rapture" may be popping, but I like the other better....eye popping smiley

Yes, Finger Popping....I believe. The next line is "24 Hour shopping" or something like that, so the popping/shopping makes sense.

Louie Louie by The Kingsmen '63.

The drummer drops a stick and yells "F* ck" on the original recording.
Caused quite a stir apparently, and after denying it for decades, the drummer finally copped to it winking smiley

At the :54 mark:

Might be a reference to the old Ike and Tina song, which mentions finger poppin and shopping (and a great song by the way!):

I doubt this one made it past the censors, but it reputedly got them banned from many Country Radio stations in Nashville:

Jefferson Airplane - We Can Be Together (1969) "Up against the wall, motherf%cker".

They actually got away with singing it live on the Dick Cavett Show in '69.

There's a nice line in this one abut a mule kicking in a stall. But I don't think anyone missed the meaning. A wonderful song.

Some Girls, the track, was played on Perth’s 96fm on album release. The disc jockey, a girl named Chunky from memory, was immediately dismissed.

JJ. Cale’s original version of “Cocaine” uses the line “sh*t don’t lie”. Eric Clapton changed it to “she don’t lie” and got the hit record.

Frank Zappa – Bobby Brown

It is (or used to be) a popular radio hit but nobody ever seemed to listen to the lyrics. Otherwise the song would have been censored or completely banned

Speaking of them, the song Miracles was a bit controversial for it's "down on you" line.
