Not The Way To Go. Song of the Summer
Date: June 14, 2021 20:40

I can’t stop playing Not The Way To Go. It’s so uplifting!

Is this a Jagger/Richards original? I thought it must be a cover when I first heard it but can’t trace any other version.

I remember hearing this song for the first time many decades ago on a bootleg.
I loved it almost right away. I put it on a cassette and played it in my Renault 4 while on my way to work. “Dangerous” because I tended to headbang on the rhythm grinning smiley
A great no-pretencious song, very likely Jagger/Richards.
Couldn’t find the lyrics het.

Glad you like it too, georgie48. Even by Stones standards the lyrics are pretty impenetrable. Has anyone here been able to hear wha Mick’s singing?

Infectious little ditty. The Stones do punkabilly.

Punkabilly meets Tex Mex...great tune - could have been, should have been officially released one way or another.

I hear a real retro 60s vibe in the arrangement. According to Aeppli, this track was recorded in apparently a one-off session in Hollywood in August/September 1978. It’s incredible that they didn’t release it but maybe it didn’t fit the SG punk theme at the time.

from listening to outakes or songs-in- progress it seems that Mick's technique sometimes is similar to the stream of consciousness. The spontaneity of the improvisation also results in Mick using simple patterns, repeated many times almost like perverted rock and roll lullabies made to wake us up!!

You can’t decipher them because they aren’t lyrics. Maybe you hear him say “telephone” or another word here or there, but these are just fillers. He’s got the melody and the phrasing but often doesn’t do the lyrics - beyond a title, which could also be a place holder - until the last phase. And, yes, he even rhymes his gibberish.

What you CAN hear is him calling out chord changes, further evidence that this is an early/working version of a tune they were in-process with.

This song is a stand out, no doubt, but the beauty of this, and so many other vocals of the “fully finished” batch is that Mick so effortlessly does “Mick” on them (which he should, since he is Mick!) And when listening to them it usually doesn’t even matter that the lyrics aren’t “real” because they sound so much like what he would be singing.

All that being said, I absolutely love this song and it’s groove.

Not trying to troll but from these mid-78 sessions I much prefer the splendid "I'll Let You Know".

Too bad they didn't rework this one for ER or TY.

JMARKO: You are correct on every count. Wow, what a great tune! Really hope Mick decides to come back to it, finish the lyrics (or not? smiling smiley) and release soon!

Isn't it the preliminary workings for "Where the boys all go"?

Here are 7 minutes of it.

Where The Boys go was recorded before Not The Way To Go.
