Lee Perry is the only guy who could clear his throat in time to the riddim and make it sound crucial. I don't know where I have that but couldn't find it on youtube just now. Might be on one of the Baked Tapes compilations.

Keith Richards is probably the only Rolling Stone who sincerely put his heart into reggae both as a guitarist and singer, judging some (live) versions here.

yeah man thats my brother Earl Chin on Mike Cacia's Rockers TV cable program. Mick has always kept up on things, popular culture, his buddying up with Protege not too long ago is an example. And of course that whole Walk and Don't Look Back fiasco.
But as far as being into the music itself, I don't agree. Its been keef or ronnie at the forefront of that in the band. Wingless Angels being just one example of how deep. And guesting on session after session for bonafide vintage reggae artists since the 70s. I wonder who chose Half Pint's Winsome for their catalogue?
By the way that eight minutes or whatever is a distillation of the actual interview which lasted about an hour. There were some um imperfections in the other footage and it has never been shown. Earl baby is not the best of influences sometimes but I suppose they didn't really need the influence to go on so.

As much as I like the Stones reggae songs I think that they always do good songs but not always good reggae. Cherry Oh Baby is definitely what we used to call cod reggae.

I begged Rojah to let me attend the interview and maybe help out somehow, but, uh, no. We (rojah, his wife Mary, and myself) also cruised the Wiltern one night when the stones were playing there but couldn't get past all the security. More failed attempts at greatness or at least an interesting experience.
Had plenty of fun times over at his place, including a couple long weekends helping him digitize his audio and video collection, and interesting people always dropping in, as one can imagine. Rojah himself is a very interesting cat with a lot of diverse experiences including testifying before Congress about the futility of the Vietnam situation. Although he specialized in the Marley trade, he has always said his favorite singer was Alton Ellis. Gotta respect him for that, he has always had good taste in music.

Not sure I understand you here Rockman, there is the photo of KR at Rojahs place in Echo Park, the interview I am speaking about was available somewhere as a dvd. That photo may even be a still from it. I regret I flaked on the chance to actually sit there and watch it, I was hoping for a copy to take home but Rojah didn't feel comfortable with letting one out at that point, could have been a condition of the interview in the first place. It was a pretty tightly controlled deal.
I do think I recall a phone interview prior to that though so maybe thats what you are thinking of. I may even have a copy of it in my archives somewhere.
Did some looking around, here is part 1 of the dvd that came with the SD wingless angels set, this contains some footage of the interview at Rojahs house and a bunch more voiceover of the interview over other footage
I thought for sure there was a special edition with the entire filmed interview on it but cannot find it so guess not.
Justin Hinds was one of the nicest people I ever met. Got to hang around with him for a weekend or two and it was a pleasure talking to him,

I am going to give rojah a call tonite and see whats up. I now think I recall the whole interview was going to be released verbatim in the super deluxe set, but at the last moment it was scrapped and the actual film production was done. Gonna verify that too, its got me curious about whatever happened to the interview footage or if it ever got put out.
