As others said before me, reggae is not something the Stones always did very well. The big exception is Feel On Baby, which is a great song. One of the best on Undercover.

I don’t think it’s a genre they handle particularly well. Then again, some of the early ska ‘classics’ aside, I’m not much of a reggae fan. I do like Feel Oh Baby quite a bit, though.

Well, we could also add to the list Keith first solo attempt with Jimmy Cliff " the harder they come".

Are you thinking of the actual music (the notes), the rhythm, both or just the general vibe of it all?

For me it's a stretch, but when the harmonica kicks in there might be an island-feel there. I've never thought about it that way, though.

Maybe I feel differently about this track from now on, hehe smiling smiley

I have a Stones reggae mix that includes "Start Me Up" when it was still "Never Stop" and also "I Can Feel The Fire"....come at me!!!
what else is on it?

Most of what has been listed and maybe these:

Cracking Up live 77
Truly by the New Barbarians
Too Rude live at the Palladium (so much better)
Serious Love 1978 as nice transition music...
Careless Ethiopians (Toots with Keith)
Pressure Drop (Toots with Keith)

and beyond that:

Stand Firm (same album as Walk and dont look back)
Bush Doctor (")
How Do You Do Africa (New Barbarians sort of?)
I also enjoyed adding Wingless Angels "What A Joy" although that may not have a Stone on it...or a coherent Stone...

Have fun with it!

Nice! These are great!

Its not really "roots reggae", more nyabingi chant and drumming.

I would offer the version of Too Rude (Winsome) played by xpensive winos at Hollywood Palladium. That actually has a pretty authentic vibe to it vs most of the Stones attempts at the music which as noted are generally pretty shabby.

Then there was KR on Black Uhuru's original Shine Eye Gal 12". Kind of buried deep in the mix like all non-rhythm guitars should be in the genre.

Some of KRs playing on Max Romeo Holding My Love Out To You album is pretty good.

And one of the most lasting impressions on the reggae world from the Stones was their mobile being used to record Bob Marley and the Wailers Live.

Ronnie’s first effort with the band, “Hey Negrita”.

From Wikipedia:

"Hey Negrita"

Credited to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Ron Wood apparently wrote the song's main riff, a piece of music he took with him to Munich's Musicland Studios where he and other guitarists were auditioning for the second guitarist slot left open after the departure of Mick Taylor.[1] For his contribution, Wood would receive an "inspiration by" credit on the album. In 2003, Wood recounted, "All of us, independently and together, were into reggae, and it was also a mood of the time. I had this particular lick that I took into the studio and the others said, What are we going to start with? and I said, I've got this song. Charlie [Watts] was sitting behind his kit, so he was already into it and then Keith and Mick both got into the motion of it. That was 'Hey Negrita', which came together very easily. The key to getting a song across in this band is never to try and write all the words. If you've got the rhythm, you're lucky! Let Mick write the words and then you're in with a chance."[2]

"Lee and Molly" - Keith with Ziggy Marley

Re: Stones Reggae
Date: June 4, 2021 23:02

I never liked traditional reggae, it makes me doze off, too predictable. Once the fusion kicked in I started to like the more western groove, the shuffle feel in particular. Toto's Jeff Porcaro made it really take off I think. Rosanna comes to mind, or PHD "I won't let you down", Simon Phillips on drums, Zappa's Bolero or the less commercial MS Morrisine (Miles Davis). I don't recall Charlie Watts ever playing a reggae-ish shuffle. I stopped following the Stones after Black and Blue though; so maybe I missed something ?

Rockman, where did you see these attributions? I never knew of it and not sure I recognize those song titles. rather recent day like sometime in the past 20 years?

And did KR actually play on them or did Scratch steal/"sample" the guitar?

Kinda curious about this stuff.

Rockman, did a little research, and yeah saw that came saw conquered release from 2008. Is it any good? Most stuff from that era did nothing for me. Or are they old recordings surfacing? If the latter, gotta hunt it down

On Revelation (no "s"), says KR on Percussion [Kick Drum With Mallet] on discogs, no mention of guitar there at least. Again, is this new (for the time) material or classis Lee Perry production? Never mind, this is New York stuff.

Both on the same label, maybe recorded in same sessions? Definitely not vintage recordings.

thanks never knew of the connection, rarely listen to 2000s lee perry except maybe if adrian sherwood is involved.
