Their first crack at reggae might have been I Got A Letter, which they started working on in 1973, methinks.

I should have said LUXURY was the 1st released Reggae track in 1974. Now you can add I got a Letter, too.

It is a stretch, but the last part of Sweet Black Angel has an "island sound", at least - with the marimbas and the groove there. It's not pure reggae, though smiling smiley

Just sat through "I Got A Letter" which I never heard of or heard before today. I need some ganja, man, 'cause there ain't no other way to listen to this without a little help from ganja. I know many will dig this song, but, this is akin to the kind of bullsh*t jamming me and friends used to do after we had elevated our consciousness and thought we were making some really creative/cool sounds. The best Stones related reggae, IMHO, is MJ and Peter Tosh doing "Gonna Walk and Don't Look Back". A groove the Stones have never quite captured in their reggae explorations.

If solo-tunes are allowed Sweetness My Weakness deserves a mention.

their first crack at it was covering Bo Diddley's Cracking Up a long long long time before Love You Live. Although of course it wasn't "reggae" because reggae had not been called that then. More like a cha cha cha, but has that proto reggae sound, so did the original.

Winos doing Words of Wonder, Boston '93 is pretty awesome. They do the coolest break, right before Keef starts singing, that's not on the studio version.

They weren't that good at it. Cherry Oh Baby is a misfire. Not till Keith did You Don't Have to Mean It was there a genuine feel.

Send It To Me is one too, I guess.

Edit: Sorry, just saw it in the first post.

Reactions: Stones Crackin' Up - more ska than reggae to my ears. Ronnie's Sweetness My Weakness, Keith's Love Overdue - gonna need some more ganja. Living In A Ghost Town - reminds me, today, of KR's Rock Awhile, the beat turned a bit.

Maybe we should change the title of this topc to Stones Caribbean influenced or

"The Rolling Stones: Pirates of the Caribbean"

and then we can collect all Caribbean influenced songs.

There are a lot.

I have a Stones reggae mix that includes "Start Me Up" when it was still "Never Stop" and also "I Can Feel The Fire"....come at me!!!

Of all the different genres and styles of music the Stones have incorporated in to their vast catalogue, I'd say Reggae is easily the weakest link.
Keith's cover version of Love Overdue from Crosseyed Heart is perhaps the purest and best attempt, but most of the rest from the Stones as a band is inferior.

Most of what has been listed and maybe these:

Cracking Up live 77
Truly by the New Barbarians
Too Rude live at the Palladium (so much better)
Serious Love 1978 as nice transition music...
Careless Ethiopians (Toots with Keith)
Pressure Drop (Toots with Keith)

and beyond that:

Stand Firm (same album as Walk and dont look back)
Bush Doctor (")
How Do You Do Africa (New Barbarians sort of?)
I also enjoyed adding Wingless Angels "What A Joy" although that may not have a Stone on it...or a coherent Stone...

Have fun with it!
