OT: Eurovision Song Contest

When you thought it was bad it is getting even worse. What an epic sleaze fest. And yanks behold, this monster is coming your way soon.
Apparently an American company has bought the rights to the format...

Italy reminded me of Lenny Kravitz. Pose indeed. Slovenia was out in the first place; The best to me, she could sing without a fake show backing it up.

"Getting worse"? Aren't those always been as horrible as they ever can be...grinning smiley

But as typical, I only watched the counting of points... so I only heard the winner. But what I find funny is that in today's world a rock song wins anything... Or probably that's the way to go nowadays that rock music is popular only in the old and tired Eurovision Song Contest... Seemingly Finland got a nice public vote as well - being second or third. I recall heard it once, and it was also a kind of rock tune if memory serves.

So like the Italian winner shouted: "Rock and roll never dies!"...eye rolling smiley

Rock and roll is the new music hall, sadly.

I liked the song from Italy.
France too. Portugal was nice. Ukraine was weird and fun.
I guess this is what you call guilty pleasure..

I watched it, for once. There seemed to be a hidden formula of putting the "best" songs in the last part of the show. The first half was really a bore.

I was pleased to see that my own judgement corresponded to the professional jury`s, as voting for Switzerland.

-All in all a whole lot of bad songs this time. Lituania`s song "Discoteque" looked and sounded like a pause feature to me. Germany was really terrible. It sounded like he had stolen Lulu`s 1971 song "Got To Believe In Love", which is a great song, by the way. Israel? -Ouch! -Or Russia? Give me a break!

A generic rocker won, based on a blues rock pattern. If you looked and listended closely, the singer got some extra "wow!" from the audience by showing his curled tongue. -Another winner that we never will hear again.

Never seen it before. Has any previous winner gone on to become famous?

Some big names have won, or nearly won in the past. As mentioned already, ABBA reigned victorious and the U.K.’s entry in 1967, Sandie Shaw’s Puppet on a String, took the top-spot that year. Actually, the following year, Cliff Richard was a close second with Congratulations.

i loved the song from Malta ,,and hope that amazing young lady finds further success.

Watching Switzerland and Italy fight it out, only to be trumped at the last by Italy was like seeing Rembrandt and Van Gogh being out-voted by a potato print.

The winning 'song' had a serviceable riff and was performed with commendable brio, but I struggle to hear a 'song' there....

not enough junk! In those good old days, it was so much more fun with all of these (involuntary) trash acts.
Beside that: It's amazing how reliable the UK is to keep Germany away from being the worst loser

Maybe not "world famous", but she did very well in Europe:

Vicky Leandros

Some were already "famous" ... Cliff Richard, Udo Jurgens, Sandie Shaw, Lulu ... (for them it was a way to get some additional attention). Several others made a good living out of it without really becoming "famous".

I think this is two years on the trot, now. Europe clearly has it in for us!

Frankly, though: how marvellous it is to be out of that E.U. racket! winking smiley

two interesting observations:
- none of the TOP 3 songs was sung in English
– the winning song and the 2nd song are completely different

Only 14 of the 26 countries in the contest are EU members. UK has been doing shite in that contest long before 2016. A few years ago people were 'blaming' it on the invasion of Iraq ffs.

To be fair the ESC was quite good in the 60s and 70s and a bit into the 80s. Never "hip" but decent entertainment. The UK was particularly good in the 60s and France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Italy,
among other countries, have contributed with many good entries through the years. It's a pity that the event has turned into something like this...

The UK and Germany have the same structural problem: their own markets for pop music are too big. Thus singers and bands don't have be be successful elsewhere to make a career. For bands and singers from smaller countries on the other hand the ESC is a great chance to reach other much larger markets than their home markets. Therefore smaller countries or rather countries with smaller pop markets send their top act to the ESC, while that kind of contest is not attractive for pop acts who are big in countries like the UK or Germany. Already succesful pop acts from those countries will never take the risk of being voted down. Thus you'll never see really good and/or chart toping bands or singers from the UK or Germany in the ESC. Instead these countries send newcomers that nobody has ever heard of before (and that no one will ever hear of again).

I only saw the news reports. I live in the US and have never watched it. Question: For how many years has the competition been about costumes and glitter and who can look the most outrageous? It seems the music itself takes a back seat to who can look the most 'Vegas.
