One thing I noticed immediately, was that I had a visceral reaction to the 'worst' cut. There is no worst cut, but if you play this game, there has to be a least favourite.

Funny, I never thought of exile in terms of this, as even the 'weaker' tracks are fabulous.

I had to do this by thinking about which was my favourite and then removing from list. Didn't have a clue which would be my 'least favourite' until I got to the end.

SO...my order of songs in preference. Excruciating exercise.:

My older brother got the 8-track, my mom used to make him take me to school, I can still remember sitting in the back seat of his 72 Duster with the tunes pumping out of the high powered amp stereo system...ears bleeding and smiling all the way! I guess I just realized that's where it all started.

I'm surprised how low ranked Let it Loose is, both at Far Out and the posters above.
Exile seem to have something for every fan, even if we don't share taste and opinions.

My first third part of the album:

Loving Cup
Sweet Virginia
All Down the Line
Shine a Light

Thommie-The problem with Let it Loose is it comes way too late in the album. Too many similar songs in style before it. By the time you get to it you've already heard Sweet Virginia, Sweet Black Angel, and Loving Cup. I feel like Shine a Light should have closed the album. Also think All Down the Line should come much earlier. Sticky Fingers and Exile both had odd song orders in my opinion.

There are no problems with Let It Loose.

It has a mellotron on it? It's beautiful, but messy? It is both over rated and under rated? It ends, but feels unresolved?

Agreed...even though it's lower on my list, it's only because there is so much good. Excruciating choosing.

Loving Cup, Sweet Virginia and Let It Loose are my favs from Exile.

Loving Cup especially is @#$%& magic!

Exile is a funny one for me: rarely do I reach for it, yet every time I do so, I'm transfixed. It works superbly as a complete listening experience.

Rocks Off is such a great opener.

Something for everyone. For me, not a duff track, nothing I would skip, nothing I think they should have taken out. The 'perfect' album.

Exile is perfect as it is. Just like all the Big Four.

It simply wasn’t U.K. practice. Those Capitol and London LP’s feel far less authentic for including the contemporary singles of the day.

You can't go ranking the 18 songs on "Exile on Main Street." There are no songs on that album. There are 18 movements. You have to listen to that record in one sitting in order from the first movement, "Rocks Off," to the last, "Soul Survivor." Along the way you will explore many peaks and valleys. You will hear something you never heard in the 412 previous times you listened to "Exile on Main Street."
