Exile On Mainstreet

Don't laugh, but I actually own don't own this album. I've been a fan all my life... I own about 60 bootleg CD's and DVD's. I've seen multiple concerts. But I never got to buying this one. So I decided I'd download it today(it's sunday, shops are closed, I'll buy it later, don't worry!). I know most songs but only the live versions or Stripped versions. It's pretty cool, isn't it hehe!

I envy you for the pleasure you'll have delving into "Exile."

Enjoy it. After seventeen years, it's just sounding better and better to me.

One thing: The photographs by Robert Frank used on the sleeve are extordinary and brilliantly conceived as a visual companion to the music and to the concept of being an exile--even while on "main street."

Downloads are no substitute for at least buying the CD and with its art...and perhaps even the LP.

Downloads no substitute... I´m sure (I know) thats a well-represented
opinion here at the board, among all the collectors.
But meself I´m pleased with it. Call me weird.
You cant bring anything with yourself to the Other Side anyhow.
But the spirit may take a piece of the songs...

and then keep asking why the artists don't release more ...

Five hungry kids, rarely full-time job...
What can a poor boy do?

But I went to Wyman
& I will go see Taylor.

>> I just dont have the economy to but records, sorry. <<

right: i can't afford to buy what i want, so i'll just take it.

(and before we get into any misapprehensions: you do not want to know how little teachers in poland earn, i promise.)
my principles don't obligate anyone but me, i know -
but they are strongly-felt principles, maybe from living with/among artists and seeing what this does to them, and i feel it's important to point out the other side.
there are people around here who have stated that they believe "everyone" downloads/copies/trades official releases when they feel like it,
and i want to make it abundantly clear:
it's *not* universally regarded as okay to rip off artists. there are people who really truly feel that that is not what artists are for.

Sorry, but if you can afford a computer and internet access, you can shell out $15-20 for one of the greatest (if not the greatest) CDs (or albums or cassettes or 8-tracks) in history. I don't buy your argument.

Reptile, I can't wait for your review of Exile. I almost get the impression that if Exile is not ones favorite album (or top2-3) you are not a TRUE Stones fan.

It's way down there on my list. To me it's an album with some of their best songs and some I can't even listen too.

Just play it, and notice how you get into a happy, relaxed mood as your mood adapts to the feeling in the music.

Lady Ssoul once again you show your style and humility. Principles, a good thing...

Re: Exile On Mainstreet

I always have a mixed feeling if someone calls EXILE ON MAIN ST the best Stones album - back in 1972 someone said there are just enough good songs on it to fill an EP, the rest would be fillers... but whatever.

One of the main reasons this album is so great is that there are so many songs on it - 1972 quality (NOT 2005 quality!). In my opinion there is great stuff on it, but actually there ARE fillers on it (*). But the sequence of the songs results in an original swampy Nellcote feeling. To me the album sounds like some official songs are mixed up with second class unfinished bootleg stuff and I really like that.

Somehow I feel even SOME GIRLS would have the status of an EXILE if they would have released 16 songs of those sessions instead of only 10...

(*) well I know mayn of you will disagree, but here they are: Casino boogie, Loving cup, Just wanna see his face, Turd on the run, Shine a light (some fillers on a high standard, of course)

I think Nanker-Phelge can do without my money.
I do enough for them anyway, believe me.
As I wouldnt buy the records if I couldnt download them,
no one loses anything anyway. Everybody´s happy.

Withsssoul, with all respect, please put your moral cookies back where they belong.

...Elmo believe me, Sweden is a Third World country today.
The neoliberals have tore the welfare system down.
Where I live there are no jobs.
- Plus if I´ve money over my priority is presents for my wife & the
kids & beer for myself. Expensive, Belgian beer smiling smiley.
And if I would save any day, money would go to a trip to a warm country.

I´m sure more pople on this site download; in fact I see almost all of you do.
"We´re not old men with petty morals."

I´m sure ya all are happy today because Richards (and Dylan and a lot
of other well respected artists) nicked some album.

As the Native Americans say: "Don´t judge a man, before you have walked a mile in his worn-out cheep Nike-copies".

....And dont you worry, I have my own etics too;
I buy records from poor musicians, even if their
work is downloadable.
I´ve been a promotor & manager for several hardcore poetry
bands, indie bands from all over the world, so I have a
portion of idealism fully corresponding to your own,
dear Lady Soul. Ok?

And I´m NOT ashamed to download the Stones; are you?
I did not download their catalog, but I borrowed the records from
a friend. Is that also forbidden nowadays? Some of the albums
I borrowed from the library, hope that´s ok.

Thank ya, Cn.
My back ground is BTW somewhat different from most people here;
about 1½ year ago from now my job was to make a five-hour show
on the Rolling Stones. I had Voodoo Lounge & Aftermath.
Not too bad albums, but still not enuff for a show.
I late June I had three months to get all the records.
That´s dl for ya.

Exile is the Stones at their absolute peak. Every song is a gem, a classic in it's own right. People always complain about fillers, but to me this album is one of the very very few ever that has no filler at all. It's symply the best ride I ever took.

Exile on Main St. is an audio encyclopedia of american roots'n'roll....it's all there for the taking (wax free ears only)...it's total greatness takes a quite a few plays to absorb

Glad we´re back on the track again, sorry for excursions.
Rutger & Leo - you nailed it: this was the exam
in the Stones school, for me when my uncle told me
to sit down in his sofa & just enjoy Exile for
the first time ever, as a 40-year-old
(of course I´d heard TD & Shine A Light); sort of:
"Now listen, son... " smiling smiley
