Black And Blue released 45 years ago today
Posted by: Elmo Lewis ()
Date: April 23, 2021 21:31

My first real mega-famdom with the Stones. I was a 15 year old high school sophomore! I still think it is my favorite (not necessarily the best, just my favorite).

The funkiness of Hot Stuff, good rocking of Hand Of Fate and Crazy Mama, the cool weirdness of Melody and Hey Negrita, and, of course, the 2 great ballads, Fool To Cry and Memory Motel. smileys with beer

The less said about Cherry Oh Baby, the better. confused smiley

Gonna dig it out and listen right now. smoking smiley

Elmo, I'm right there with you. I was 14 in '76, and the Black and Blue album was my way in to the Stones. Two years later I'd see Springsteen do 'Rosalita' on the Whistle Test and so began my other lifelong musical passion.Great days...

I love Black and Blue.

Not many bands in between guitarists produce albums like Black and Blue and Let It Bleed.

Oh yeah, I'm a Bruce fan too. So strong through Tunnel Of Love. The occasional great song since.

Remember how it was slagged off when it came out? Melody Maker titled its review: 'Sometimes you can't even get what you need'.

Aaahh, Elmo Lewis,

You should have waited 5 more years with this thread winking smiley
I'm still heavily into the 50st Anniversary of Sticky Fingers ...

But .... I always loved Black and Blue which I bought in 1976 in Sydney while visiting friends in Australia. I gave the album to those friends and got myself another one after I (we) returned to the Netherlands. 45 years, really?

I still love HOT STUFF. The video promo is fun and those funky grooves by Jagger... awesome!

An album I have very little personal attachment to. It was released seven years prior to my birth and wasn’t part of my father’s Stones collection. It’s generally not an era of their career I gravitate towards, or have too much interest in. Saying that, however, I do enjoy the record to a degree: Hand of Fate and Crazy Mama are decent, and Hot Stuff is different enough to be interesting. Many here seemingly moan about the releases lack of tracks, but in terms of L.P. length, it’s standard. I rate Black & Blue 3 stars.

It's a pity that an album with one of their best covers (I mean the photo, not the reggae song which is terrible), is musically not among their best. The sound is rather good, and I love "Melody", which is great fun. "Hand of Fate" is kind of pleasant too. Their disco and reggae efforts, however, not so much. And the rest I don't even remember.

where did they record this video? (there's advertisement in German ('Nordstern Versicherungen')in the back (at 1:40))

To this day Black & Blue is the most original Stones album, the excursion to other music styles worked perfectly, without betraying the Stones mould. Truly a great set of songs, even getting better with time.

The album also has the Stones' best cover and the best music videos promoted it (even though quickly shot on a concert stage between gigs in Germany).

the four videos were shot in Ostseehalle Kiel, May 1st 1976 - the day before the concert in the same venue, all directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg

I've read before it was Frankfurt's festhalle, the first stop on the tour. But maybe the Nordstern advertisement indeed points to Kiel. Do you you have any more info on this? Not that I'm doubting, just interested.

As a whole I like it better than Undercover and every other album that followed in the latter era,
yet think it's one of the weakest albums prior to Undecover and the era that preceeded with Emotional Rescue probably being the weakest.

That said, there are some truly great tunes I've always loved from it.
On a scale of one to ten:

Hot Stuff - 9 - I remember it blasting out of the radio when it was released, and always love the funkiness with Mick's out of control vocals and the amazing guitar solo from Harvey Mandel.
Hand of Fate - 9.5 - The second it kicks off I'm hooked and the singing/stinging solo blazes trails...still wonder how great/different the Stones might have been had they kept Wayne Perkins
Cherry Oh Baby - 1...Maybe even a zero as the Eric Donaldsen version is far superior in every way, while this version is simply obnoxious and unlistenable.
Memory Motel - 7 - One of the sweetest, and when Keith chimes in "She's got a mind of her own...", well it really is quite genius the way that tune works.
Hey Negrita - 2 - Gotta give Ronnie a bit of credit for trying, but many of his Stones contributions are far better (Everything is Turning to Gold, et al.)
Melody - 3 - Hokey faux jazzy junk...something Bette Midler might have recorded...though I do love all of the guitar bits throughout.
Fool to Cry -2 - Generally pure crap, though it does find a nice groove towards the end with some nice guitar parts...
Crazy Mama - 8 - Maybe a nine...needs to be cranked up to 10...simple and effective Stonesy rock and roll in ever way.

Who cares. Great cover picture but average album. Some very good songs though such as Hand of fate or Memory motel.

Sticky Fingers 50th release birthday is much more significant.

I think Memory Motel is a great song. Back and forth Keith and Mick.

Too bad we didn't get more stuff like this.

But I bought it back in '76 on the day it came out, and as much as I wanted to like it, I had to admit that overall it was obviously a

Outside of the big four it is one of my favourites.....

Hey Negrita & Hot Stuff are seriously funky grooves.

Hand of Fate & Crazy Mama are punchy Stones rockers.

Memory Motel & Fool To Cry are beautiful ballads.

Love it......
