Mick Jagger Shares the Origins of New Dave Grohl Collaboration “Eazy Sleazy”:

Mick Jagger and Dave Grohl are intergenerational rock icons of the highest order, each so prolific and in-demand over the years that it might surprise some that they’ve only now just released their first song together. Grohl and his Foo Fighters actually filled in in a pinch as Jagger’s backing band on Saturday Night Live back in 2012, but “Eazy Sleazy” marks their first time collaborating on a track. And it’s been worth the wait. It’s a blazing number that takes cues from both The Rolling Stones and Foo Fighters with production courtesy of longtime Stones collaborator Matt Clifford.

“Eazy Sleazy” makes no secret of its inspiration. The song directly addresses COVID-19 and the way it has impacted life throughout the past year. Jagger wanted the song to take a “semi-humorous” look into pandemic life, exploring the ways that we’ve all adjusted to living in social isolation. “I’m sure an atmosphere of isolation or semi-isolation has changed what’s being created in this period,” speculates Jagger. “I’m sure it subtly affected a lot of people’s subject material and the way they write music.”

Asked further about songwriting during the pandemic, The Rolling Stones frontman tells Consequence, “You’ve got lots of time to think. But in other ways, you’re not being quite so stimulated by what you’re seeing around you, or other people’s ideas as much.”

We had the chance to sit down with Jagger to discuss “Eazy Sleazy”, working with Dave Grohl, the song’s pandemic motifs, and more. Take a listen to the track below, and read all about its Origins ahead.

In some ways, it’s kind of easy because you’ve got lots of time to think. But in other ways, I think it’s harder because you’re not being quite so stimulated by what you’re seeing around you, or other people’s ideas as much. I’m not playing. I’ve been really lucky, but for songwriters, maybe you don’t have as many cross-cultural references going on as you usually might. So, you have to be a bit in your own head. You could say, “Well, you know, you can be a bit introspective.” I don’t think that’s it for everyone. But I’m sure it subtly affected a lot of people’s subject material and the way they write music. I’m sure an atmosphere of isolation or semi-isolation has changed what’s being created in this period.

I haven’t written loads of songs about it. “Eazy Sleazy” is the only song I’ve written on this subject. I wrote it really quickly a few weeks ago. I thought, “Well, I might as well do one on the whole experience of it in a semi-humorous way.” I mean, it’s not at all humorous, obviously, because it’s not a subject of total humor. But, it’s an experience of having to be in a very different kind of world for a whole year now. Then we’re seeing that in a lot of places — we’re coming to see the end of it, or coming to the end of this part of it, and being a bit optimistic in the choruses. So, that was my push for this song. I thought, “Well, it has to come out now because this is the period of optimism. I can’t wait another six months.” So, I thought, you know, that would be good to do.

thought, “Who is very experienced in working from home, and I could work from a distance with, and could really get into it?” And I thought Dave [Grohl] would be a great person to do that, as he’s such a great drummer. I really wanted some live drums, so that’s why I thought Dave would be great on it. I just got him up, and he said, “I’m going in tomorrow to do it!” I said, “OK!” He did bass and some guitar parts, and I had done some guitar parts. So, we did it pretty quickly.

I had done the demo, and it was pretty much set the way it was going to be. We worked on the way I’d done the demo. Then I said, “Just play to that.” So, he did the drums first, and he totally got the vibe of it straight away. He just likes to rock hard. It’s what I like. It’s to the point where we’re not messing around, and it’s very incisive. He’s a really easy, very enthusiastic guy to work with, so I enjoyed that. It didn’t take long. In a couple sessions, it was done. Then we got Mark “Spike” Stent, who mixed Medicine at Midnight.

Love the almost punk feel of this..

Grohl finally won me over when he appeared with Mick on SNL, his No Filter guest appearance on Bitch (best guest appearance of recent tours imo) and his drum challenge with Nandi winking smiley

Physiologically, Mick is 15 years younger than Keef or Charlie. Therefore it's only normal Mick works with the younger generation.

And (imho) that gives us a hint of post-Stones activities : Keef and Charlie will retire while Mick will keep going with younger people.

Cool! It is always great to get a surprise new song from one of the Boys! Hard hitting Jagger rocker and I definitely hear Grohl's influence and style. Prob wont be a classic but a fun tune for these times. Thanks Mick!

Reminds me of "Doom and Gloom" a bit. A, nowadays, typical Mick-song. I think the collaboration with Grohl rejuvenates him. It seems like he has a urge to stay busy.
And I guess Grohl is easy to work with. A very likeable guy, Grohl. The song? good or bad? Something in between, like "Doom and Gloom". So far at least. I've only listened to it once...

Some great early press on this.
Nice words from Grohl.. may not end up being "the song of the summer" but, good on both of them. It rocks.

Mick Jagger and Dave Grohl Drop Surprise Pandemic Anthem, ‘Eazy Sleazy’

While Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones have been working on a new studio album for the better part of a decade, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl likes to work fast — and his influenced apparently rubbed off on Jagger, as the duo surprise-released a pandemic anthem deceptively called “Eazy Sleazy” on Tuesday.

Judging by the socially distanced video, the song was performed entirely by the two of them, with Jagger on lead vocals and rhythm guitar and Grohl playing everything else.

The punky song is certainly the liveliest thing Jagger has released in many years, and despite its raunchy title, it’s entirely about the pandemic. While the lyrics, presumably written by Jagger, aren’t terribly deep, they are funny in a dark-humor kind of way: “Cancel all the tours, football’s fake applause, no more travel brochures”; “Trying to write a tune, better hook me up to Zoom”; “Way too much TV, it’s lobotomizing me”; and best of all, “Shooting the vaccine, Bill Gates is in my bloodstream.”

Jagger commented in the press release that accompanied the video: “It’s a song that I wrote about coming out of lockdown, with some much needed optimism. Thanks to Dave Grohl for jumping on drums, bass and guitar, it was a lot of fun working with him. – hope you all enjoy Eazy Sleazy”

Grohl added: “It’s hard to put into words what recording this song with Sir Mick means to me. It’s beyond a dream come true. Just when I thought life couldn’t get any crazier……and it’s the song of the summer, without a doubt!!”

I think this is the first time I actually listened to a Mick Jagger solo song. Just because Dave Grohl's on it.

Not a punk fan so a little too much punk for me. I wish it would’ve been a Stones song in the same vein as their punk stuff from Some Girls, then I’d totally buy in. However, new music is new music and better than no music nonetheless. Happy to see Mick is active with a lot of energy! Hope this leads to more.

Awesome! There's nothing quite like some surprise new music from one of the Stones at least. It has a Ramones vibe on the main verses. I like it a lot!

Mick and Dave beat Keith to the new music horizon. Your move, Mr. Richards!

I think Mick summed up the reason he went with Grohl on this fairly well in the interview I posted above.
Would have likely ended up the flip side of LIAGT if Keith/Charlie were into tech is the way I read it.

"I wrote it really quickly a few weeks ago. I thought, “Well, I might as well do one on the whole experience of it in a semi-humorous way.” I mean, it’s not at all humorous, obviously, because it’s not a subject of total humor. Lyrics

W'E TOOK IT ON THE CHIN
THE NUMBERS WERE SO GRIM
BOSSED AROUND BY PRICKS
STIFFEN UPPER LIPS
PACING IN THE YARD
YOU’RE TRYING TO TAKE THE MICK
YOU MUST THINK I'M REALLY THICK

LOOKING AT THE GRAPHS WITH A MAGNIFYING GLASS
CANCEL ALL THE TOURS FOOTBALLS FAKE APPLAUSE
NO MORE TRAVEL BROCHURES
VIRTUAL PREMIERES
IVE GOT NOTHING LEFT TO WEAR

LOOKING OUT FROM THESE PRISON WALLS
YOU GOT TO ROB PETER IF YOU'RE PAYING PAUL
BUT ITS EASY EASY EVERYTHING’S GONNA GET REALLY FREAKY
ALRIGHT ON THE NIGHT
SOON IT LL BE BE A MEMORY YOU'RE TRYING TO REMEMBER TO FORGET

THAT'S A PRETTY MASK
BUT NEVER TAKE A CHANCE TIK TOK STUPID DANCE
TOOK A SAMBA CLASS I LANDED ON MY ASS
TRYING TO WRITE A TUNE YOU BETTER HOOK ME UP TO ZOOM
SEE MY PONCEY BOOKS TEACH MYSELF TO COOK
WAY TOO MUCH TV ITS LOBOTOMISING ME
THINK IVE PUT ON WEIGHT
ILL HAVE ANOTHER DRINK THEN ILL CLEAN THE KITCHEN SINK

WE ESCAPED FROM THE PRISON WALLS
OPEN THE WINDOWS AND OPEN THE DOORS
BUT ITS EASY EASY
EVERYTHING S GONNA GET REALLY FREAKY
ALRIGHT ON THE NIGHT
ITS GONNA BE A GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS
EASY SLEAZY ITS GONNA BE SMOOTH AND GREASY
YEAH EASY BELIEVE ME
ITLL ONLY BE A MEMORY YOU'RE TRYING TO REMEMBER
TO FORGET

SHOOTING THE VACCINE BILL GATES IS IN MY BLOODSTREAM
ITS MIND CONTROL
THE EARTH IS FLAT AND COLD ITS NEVER WARMING UP
THE ARCTICS TURNED TO SLUSH
THE SECOND COMINGS LATE
THERE'S ALIENS IN THE DEEP STATE

WE'LL ESCAPE FROM THESE PRISON WALLS
NOW WERE OUT OF THESE PRISON WALLS
YOU GOTTA PAY PETER IF YOU'RE ROBBING PAUL
BUT ITS EASY EASY EVERYTHING S GONNA BE REALLY FREAKY
ALRIGHT ON THE NIGHT
WERE ALL HEADED BACK TO PARADISE
YEAH EASY BELIEVE ME
IT'LL BE A MEMORY YOU’RE TRYING TO REMEMBER TO FORGET
EASY CHEESY EVERYONE SING PLEASE PLEASE ME
IT’LL BE A MEMORY YOU'RE TRYING TO REMEMBER TO FORGET
