Me, I always say that the Stones are #1A and Springsteen is #1B. You can't really compare. For me, they're on par. Almost winking smiley

The Allman Brothers Band

I would say that but They only put out 2 studio albums, and a live album before Duane died. I don't consider them the same band afterward. Especially the Ramblin' Man Allman Brothers.

I agree to an extent (although the Haynes-Trucks guitar tandem was damn good).

Do you listen to any post-1969 Rolling Stones?

They also lost a slide playing, founding member who gave the group its name.

None most of you would have heard much of. Most "rock" music lost it for me a long time ago. Maybe the Faces or very early Dylan (Blonde on Blonde and back). Little Feat while Lowell George was alive. Mike Bloomfield, Robert Johnson, roots of the blues sort of stuff. TP & HB just because I never really got into them too much in the past and only sort of recently discovered them for what they were beyond the massive hits. R Crumb and the Cheap Suit Serenaders always have a place in my heart. First four or five years of Grateful Dead.

I also have a deplorable fondness for 70's disco and Abba.

What more do we want ?

Besides, once you've seen the original Who (with mighty Keith Moon), Led Zeppelin (although I left half way the concert because both my hearing and stomach were almost blown to pieces), U2, Bruce Springsteen, Jethro Tull, Yes, Dire Staits, Dylan (big mistake), Donovan, Dr. John, Slade (do you believe that?), BB King, Buddy Guy, Robert Grey, Chuck Berry, Van Morrison, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Black Eyed Pies, Byrds, The Outsiders (Dutch pseudo Stones ?!?), J Geils Band, George Thorogood & The Destroyers, and more, and more, and more, then you know where you really live for ... THE ROLLING STONES ... (the only regret I have is that I never saw The Rollin' Stones live cool smiley)

Working this as a pyramid of sorts...higher the tier, the higher the priority:

Rolling Stones
Bob Dylan, The Beatles (and all solos)
Velvet Underground/Lou Reed, Led Zeppelin/Robert Plant, REM
The Kinks, The Who/Pete Townshend, ABBA, Elvis
Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac, Queen, Pink Floyd, Bowie

bumped into next tier of pyramid....CCR/John Fogerty

I'd have a different/smaller pyramid for Jazz.

A few.

The Cult. There's a boogie there, as well as some depth that is beyond the silliness, and great guitar work from Billy Duffy that is excellent. And they always put on a fantastic show.

Jimmy Buffett. His early material, and some of his recent material, creates an ethos that is representative of where I live - and, of course, where I'd like to be, even though I somewhat live there. Along the way he's had some excellent musicians... and some pretty fine songs. Some really chooky (cheesy and or silly and or stupid) shit, too, but whatever. Even the Stones have chooky shit.

U2 - I know they are loved and hated here. And I understand. But after my wife died and I listened to Love Is All We Have Left and Lights Of Home, I felt like Bono had hung out with me while my wife died. Innovative and sometimes boring, overall, they love music and it's audible.

AC/DC.

Led Zeppelin.

Drive-By Truckers - another representation of where I live. And having met and hung out with them, well, ethos.

Jason Isbell - met him, knew his wife before they married. Awesome guitarist. Awesome lyricist. Cool dude. Great musician as well with a good head on his shoulders.

Soundgarden.

Pearm Jam.

Nirvana.

David Bowie.

The Beatles.

Muddy Waters.

Quite a few others - and some that are older, like Juliana Hatfield, quite new and different, like Mogwai.
