Voodoo Lounge: a wasted opportunity
Posted by: KRiffhard ()

After listening to Voodoo Lounge Sessions (Stew/Brew/Residue and alternate takes) i'm ever more convinced that this album was a wasted opportunity.
VL had the potential to become a classic but too many mistakes were made: the producer (Rick Rubin/George Drakoulias were the best choice),the sound (muffled and too clean), the choice of songs to publish and those left out (The Storm, You Got It Made, So Young, Cocaine Blues. ..), interesting grooves not developed (Zulu, Samba, Monsoon Ragoon, Middle of the sea...).
What a pity!

Unfortunately with the exception of the brilliant Thru And Thru and the OKish I Go Wild, everything after the first 5 songs is utter rubbish and an embarrassment. Honestly, put any of those songs up even next to the rockers on Emotional Rescue and you'll know what I'm talking about. There ain't no roll. And not even no rock for that matter.

The songs that have stemmed from those sessions on the recent FF boot would have made VL a far stronger album.

I like it too.
Not a masterpiece but the album sounds good many years after (Undercover ??? Bridges ???).
Brilliant single (and brilliant video) with Love is Strong.
Variety (Moon is up, New faces, The Worst, Thru and thru, Brand New Car).
Great rockers (Spark will fly, mean disposition and its solos).
Good ballad (out of tears).
Never got tired of it

Tracks 2 and 3 are rubbish and track 5 is just flake!

Love Is Strong, The Worst, Moon Is Up, Out Of Tears, I Go Wild, Baby Break It Down, Thru And Thru and Mean Disposition... that alone is a pretty damn good LP.

I’m not saying it’s not a good album! But it could have been much better.

I forget the names but there are several instrumental tunes, the one with keyboard and harmonica especially, that are killer. It's Funny, the jazzy one, is nice. Of course, You Got It Made.

They certainly did leave some great music off in favor of some very awful mush. Alas, it was the beginning of their own new trend - really good tunes, some average tunes, and some really horrible awful tunes. That's VOODOO-BANG. The worst songs from the three LPs could make a double THE WORST OF THE ROLLING STONES alone. Throw in two of the four sappy cheesy love and heart LICKS tunes and it's a deluxe double worst of.

Pared down to 10-11 songs (standard LP length) VL is as good as anything in the Stones canon, except the Jimmy Miller years.

Recently, I have been listening to the Stones later day albums from Steel Wheels and beyond, and out of all of those albums, I've grown in my appreciation of Voodoo Lounge. I do agree with comments made by others over the years that if Voodoo Lounge was whittled down to 10-12 choice cuts like above, I think it would have been better received.

KR side

You Got It Made

Creatively the Stones were done in the late seventies. Some Girls was the last LP that counted. In the eighties they could have stayed with their genre or follow trends.
They did something in between. To me their post 1981 output is pretty much irrelevant. Maybe with an exception for Undercover. Apparently Sir Michael thinks the same.
You just have to look at their setlists to realize that.

Yes, I agree. I guess with the appearance of CDs, a lot artists including the Stones got sucked up in the "Got to fill the CD" mentality.

Moon Is Up, Baby Break It Up, Mean Disposition, Out Of Tears - are you kidding me. This is the band that made Exile On Main Street, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and they are stumbling into their old age. Really, give it up if you can't be tough any more. These songs are lame. It's old man's rock. I don't know when you first got into the band but I expect a hell of of a lot more.

Sanctuary is excellent but I thought it was from 1997 and Bridges To Babylon sessions. It has a kind of slowed down Out Of Control vibe to my ears.

Could be, but Keith's guitar has that Voodoo Lounge-ish sound to it..

Leaving "the Storm" off was criminal, I love that track.

VL had a good philosophy and process, but they sort of blew their songwriting load on Wandering Spirit and Main Offender. I wish they'd saved those songs.

Yes, I think that's what it was.

Their interest and creative interst was in their own projects.

Then, 'oh let's get together to record an album for a tour again'

Worst drum sound and bass of any Stones album.

4-5 nice songs

We all differ on which those are.

(ps fairly ignorant on the out-takes - except Storm, Jump ontem and one or two others. But that bass is so bad, had no appetite to investigate further)
