OT: Any love for Wilson Pickett here?

One of the great soul/r&b singers/shouters. Here's a short read. He cut some great songs. His take on "Hey Jude" is still cool, IMHO. One also, IMHO again, has to cherry pick through his recordings to find cuts well worth keeping.

The read: [www.thevinyldistrict.com]

Hey Jude: [www.youtube.com]

Gospel stylings: [www.youtube.com]

Funk (the Stones surely based a few tunes on this style, like Hot Stuff and Miss You with its walking bass, to name two): [www.youtube.com]

I love Wicked Wilson Pickett.

His version of "Sugar, Sugar" turn it into a soul nugget.

In 1991, when Wilson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the induction speech was given by one Bobby Brown, whose career was, at that time, still considered to be extremely hot. When Bobby was asked how Mr. Pickett had influenced him, Bobby replied, "I know the name. I know they called him the 'Wicked' Pickett." Upon further questioning, "Mr. Houston" confessed that he really had absolutely no idea who Wilson Pickett was, or what he was famous for.

It's one of the most infuriating stories I've ever heard in all my years of following the entertainment industry.

I remember catching him at the Nice Jazz Festival the night after I've had the best place in the house for the Stones at the Cirkus Stockholm in july 2003. Land of 1000 Dances was amazing but as I had reached nirvana the night before I couldn't appreciate Mr Pickett fully. But what a great singer he was! RIP
