if we're talking 'big 4's from that period, how about:

happy sad (1969)
blue afternoon (1969)
lorca (1970)
starsailor (1970)

talk about a progression!

Without checking Google, I'll confess: I have no idea who you're on about!

Well, he's an artist I know of, definitely. Anyone credible from this golden-age is worth checking-out, I think. I'll do so, remembering to not start with Starsailor!

Bob Marley and the Wailers have also a strong run of albums from the seventies :

Catch A Fire (1973)
Burnin' (1973)
Natty Dread (1974)
Rastaman Vibration (1976)
Exodus (1977)

And like the Stones they had a wonderful live album (LIVE!; 1975) in the middle of this row !

Deep purple comes to my mind beginning with IN ROCK

But nothing beats the stones

...except the Beatles some years.

For me:

The Beatles 1965-1969

Stones 1968-1981

It's a great album. As Between the Buttons I like a lot, but I prefer each what came next. But as always it's a matter of taste.

Some of the most amazing facts this board shows, how we all disagree about music, although we all call ourselfes "fans".

hard to beat Bob Dylan's big four in a row:
Binging It All Back Home / Highway 61 Revisited / Blonde On Blonde / John Wesley Harding

How about Stevie Wonder's Big Four?

Talking Book
Innervisions
Fulfillingness' First Finale
Songs in the Key of Life

About as good a run as anyone has ever had.

Just heard Innervisions on a decent stereo - WOW! Still soooo good.

Just gotta say J. Geils went on a pretty good run there, too.

This is off subject but I really did laugh out loud at the absurdity of this: Guns'N'Roses had the greatest one album run ever!

Well, that is absurd. You could level that at the Sex Pistols, though!

Actually, that's another thread idea! Album one-hit wonder!

Well, possibly. Obne thing's for certain: 1971 is probably the greatest year for the studio LP. There's so many five-star classics.

I don't know if I think it's better than Let It Bleed, but The Band's self titled release (The Brown Album) from 1969 gives it a run for its money in my opinion. I like Big Pink but I prefer Beggar's to that one for 1968. And CCR's Willy and the Poor Boys from 1969 is fantastic as well. If you're into the country scene at all, John Prine's debut album from 1971 is great too. Just a few classics that I hadn't seen mentioned in the thread yet.

Everything on Hot Rocks disc 2 was written & recorded over a two year period in 1968 and 1969. Imagine if it had all been on one record.

hard to beat Bob Dylan's big three in a row:
Binging It All Back Home / Highway 61 Revisited / Blonde On Blonde / John Wesley Harding

3 to 4 : the Stones win!

That really opens it up though...

Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper
Let It Bleed, Sticky, EOMS
LZ II,III, IV, or, IV, HotH, Physical Graffitti
Tommy, Who's Next, Quadraphenia
The Chirping Crickets, Buddy Holly, That'll Be The Day

there's so many others. That 4th album in a row is a tough one.

You know, as close as it is, I would argue the Stones have the strongest three-album run amongst what you've listed. Sgt. Pepper was ground-breaking, but just isn't a favourite of mine, and I like Zeppelin's first two LP's far less than I used to. I credit them for the being the releases that got me hooked, but they'd go on to create far more interesting and less derivative work. The IV to Physical Graffiti creative streak is far more satisfying. I don’t like Tommy or Quadrophenia, and as for Buddy Holly? Doesn’t a 2-Disc compilation suffice?
