Definitive Versions
Posted by: dlyon ()

I am attempting to compile definitive versions of each live Stones song and I could use some feedback. For example, in my view the Shine A Light on Stripped is as good as it gets. I have a soundboard from LA in 1989 with Start Me Up and Ruby Tuesday that are hard to beat. Whip Comes Down from El Macambo in 1977 strikes me as the most enduring rendition. I welcome the thoughts.

Good topic...

Shine A Light is awesome on Stripped, no doubt.

Two songs that will cause a lot of disagreement will be:

Gimme Shelter:

Philly '72 (Taylor's solo is blinding)
'95 Paradiso (Keith and Ronnie's weaving never better, and Lisa's ungodly high notes)

Midnight Rambler:

Either the Ya-Ya's (Mick singing better)
Brussels Affair (completely unhinged with insane guitar work)

Just to start:

- Midnight Rambler: London 9/9/73
- Love In Vain, All Down The Line: Charlotte 72
- IORR: to me, the LYL version
- Gimme Shelter, Tumbling Dice: agree on Philly 72.
- Brown Sugar: hard to tell, maybe any 72 version
- SFTD: LA july 13th, 75
- WTWCD: Handsome Girls, can't remember if it's Fort Worth, Memphis, Detroit or where the hell was recorded the CD3 version
- YCAGWYW: NYC 26/7/72

I think it's Texas, and I'm with you on that one. Ronnie is en fuego.

I agree with Keefriff regarding Gimme Shelter (1995 Paradiso). As for Midnight Rambler, I am rather taken with MSG from 2003, but some of that, I admit, is Mick's prancing more than his singing. Happy is the most difficult for me, but I would put the Winos version with any of them.

Midnight Rambler at MSG in 2003 was unreal...I was there and then I went home and watched the HBO feed and it gave me chills all over again.

I love when Ronnie plays those scathing blues licks and Keef just smiles and nods his head approvingly...and then the way Ronnie, Keith and Darryl all huddle together in front of the drumkit laying down the groove...now THAT'S what a rock'n'roll band should look like.

Great post! You'd hope they would be like this if the event happened to you. On a related topic, 3 of my female cousins met Charlie in Atlanta. Said he was super nice (to be expected), but what was unexpected is they kept on about how "cute" he was!!!!!

BersaGurra,
Wow that's a nice collection, did you make a cds out of that. I would have perhaps used the Perth 1973 version of Bitch instead of the one you have. I don't like when the horns come in right at the opening riff of that song. I also love the 2002 MSG version of Monkey Man.

Once I get those missing songs maybe I should make a cd, I have them all in mp3's nicely mixed etc. I hear you on bitch, I just think that that Atlantic City version really rocks in comparison to most recent versions, I dont think I have the Perth version.

BersaGurra:
Looks like we struck a chord. Would you PLEASE follow up on your own suggestion, treat us all right and share the cds or, at least, a few of those mp3s. You are better though out than most who type into this site, so please share the wealth.

The best All Down the Line version has to be Philly '72.

You can go to www.yousendit.com and post a file there; they will give you a link which you can share with us so we can download it. You can only do one file at a time, so of course it would be too much of a pain to do more than 2-3 songs. I'd appreciate anything I could get! I especially would love to get my grubby little hands on Roll Over Beethoven (Berlin 70); I've never heard that one, but I love all the Chuck Berry covers they do.

Thanks ohnonotyouagain. So, if BersaGurra comes back, I think Roll Over Beethoven (70) and Luxury (75) would be blessings on us all.

This in indeed a great topic. I myself would not know where to start. I usually think of the shows as a whole. But this idea of making the versions that bersa has researched and compiled into a CD is a good one. That would be such a cool disc.
For SFM I think one would HAVE to pich a Taylor version. Nothing beats his soloing and Keith's frantic open riffing at the very end of the show.
One version not mentioned yet I would DEFINETLY mention is "Worried Bout You" from '03 at the Holland, clubshow.

Re: Definitive Versions

For I Just Want To Make Love To You,I prefer the late 90's versions maybe even 2003.Stones Age-Oakland Opening Night'99 might very well be the best.Blinded By Love was Spain(Madrid) but,it was from 1990.
